B.D. Mitchell Prosthetics and Orthotics was started in 1990 to provide effective, convenient and affordable prosthetics and orthotics on Vancouver Island.

Our comprehensive accredited facility is designed to handle every aspect of client care with exam rooms, an onsite fabrication laboratory and a large gait assessment area. We are the only accredited facility in the mid-island and upper-island region.

The clinicians are supported by 3 full-time technicians and 4 administrative personnel. Together our team is committed to providing you with the best appliance, education and service of care possible.
Bryan Mitchell began his career in prosthetics and orthotics at George Brown College training as a technician. He soon discovered that his talents extended far beyond fabricating devices into clinical assessment and patient care. With experience working in Germany and New Zealand, Bryan earned his certification in 1988 and established B D Mitchell Prosthetic & Orthotic Services Ltd. soon thereafter. He has continued to grow in his expertise and is now certified in all 3 clinical areas- prosthetics, pedorthics and orthotics. Bryan has earned numerous certificates from many top prosthetic and orthotic manufacturers including but not limited to Ottobock C-leg (microprocessor knee) Bioness L-300, Harmony (elevated vacuum socket fitting), Free walk (stance control KAFO), Myoelectrics, Ohio Willow Wood- Advanced Alpha Solutions, Cascade DAFO (Dynamic Ankle Foot Orthoses).
Kevin Branter completed a Bachelor of Science (Physiology) at the University of Saskatchewan, and then entered into the rewarding field of Orthotics and Prosthetics at BCIT in Burnaby. He completed his orthotic internship, at Wascana Rehab Centre in Regina,SK., where he specialized in the areas of paediatrics and spinal orthotics. Kevin has been with us on the island since 2004. Kevin has recently decided to expand his expertise into the prosthetic side of the field. This will compliment his current knowledge in orthotics as well as giving his prosthetic patients a different perspective on their care.
Adrienne Linder received a B.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, and is a graduate of the Clinical Methods of Orthotics and Prosthetics program at George Brown College in Toronto. Adrienne completed her orthotics residency in Surrey with an emphasis on paediatric orthotics, and has been with B D Mitchell Prosthetics & Orthotics since 2009. Since joining us she has completed her Mastectomy Fitting Certification and is eager to provide much needed post-mastectomy services to local women.
Aaron Amar Is our Comox based Certified Orthotist and operates out of our Comox office full-time. Aaron holds a B.Sc. from Simon Fraser University in Biology and is a graduate from the George Brown Prosthetics & Orthotics program. Aaron brings with him a wide variety of experience from trauma management to neuromuscular paediatrics. Aaron enjoys an active lifestyle in the Comox Valley and has become involved in the thriving local music scene as a session Jazz drummer.
Diane Calder joined the clinic in 2005 and is a Certified Pedorthist. Diane graduated with Honors from the University of Waterloo’s B.Sc. Kinesiology program in 1985. She holds Pedorthic certification in both the U.S. (1989) and Canada (2006). Diane has gained invaluable experience working in a gait analysis laboratory in Nashville, TN, analysing the biomechanics of different pathologies. Diane is a competitive runner and squash player, and rows, canoes, kayaks and cycles recreationally.
Our technical staff are very experienced craftsmen with many years of experience between them, involving the fabrication of artificial limbs, orthopaedic appliances and shoe modifications
