Music therapists use a wide variety of interventions, such as singing, playing instruments, songwriting, and lyric analysis. However, one of the most amazing interventions that music therapists use is improvisation. The client does not have to know how to play an instrument. Improvisation is a way of releasing emotions non-verbally. The music therapist creates a grounding rhythm or melody that is consistent, creating a safe space, then allows the client to express themselves naturally. Whether the improvisation is through an instrument or the voice, this allows trust to develop, as well as feelings of acceptance, and being seen and heard.
