Breast cancer treatment can affect perimenopause, menopause and life after treatment. Chemotherapy, ovarian suppression, ovary removal and anti estrogen medications may trigger sudden menopause or intensify symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, vaginal dryness, mood changes and bone health concerns. These effects can continue long after active treatment ends. Hormone therapy can also be confusing. For breast cancer survivors, systemic hormone therapy is generally avoided, although treatment decisions should be individualized with an oncology or menopause care team. Non hormonal approaches may help manage symptoms. The Mama Coach, Nancy Thorp, RN, MPH, provides evidence based menopause education and symptom support.
