When Confusion Becomes a Pattern

Feeling confused occasionally is normal in any relationship. When confusion becomes persistent—when conversations leave you questioning yourself, replaying what happened, or wondering whether you are somehow at fault—it is worth paying attention. In unhealthy or abusive relationships, confusion can keep you focused on trying to understand the other person instead of noticing your own experience. Rather than asking, “Why are they doing this?” try asking, “How do I consistently feel around this person?” Notice patterns of anxiety, guilt, fear, or self-doubt. Shifting attention back to yourself can strengthen self-trust and help you recognize what feels safe and healthy.
