No More Back Pain

Whether you’re struggling with a disc bulge, stenosis, muscle strain, or even leg pain associated with a herniated disc, there are several ways you can wind down your discomfort and match your unique symptoms with the approach that is right for you. A good back specialist will ask very specific questions to interpret the triggers to zero in on a specific mechanism of pain. Once triggers are understood, the objective is to avoid them and adapt new ways to move – to sit, tie your shoes, sleep, brush your teeth, lift your children, walk, etc.

Don’t Blame Your Cold

Despite the name, when you get painful blisters called cold sores they are caused by a virus, but not the kind that makes you sniffle and sneeze. They happen because of an infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). You can’t cure HSV or a cold sore, but you can alleviate the pain it causes by avoiding spicy or acidic foods, applying ice, and using over-the-counter remedies. Look for medicines that contain numbing agents such as phenol and menthol to reduce cracking and soften scabs. Talk to your Central Alberta Co-op pharmacist if you have questions.

Staying Active in Winter is Key!

It’s natural when our weather dips below zero we beeline indoors for our couch, blankets, and hot drinks. This hibernation creates a tendency for us to stop moving, reducing the fire that naturally burns within us when we move. Some of our favourite ways to stay active when it’s cold outside are skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking or walking, and downhill skiing or snowboarding. If exercising in the cold isn’t your thing, ask your physiotherapist or athletic therapist to design an indoor program to keep you healthy and active over the winter months.

Mediterranean Diet for Health

Over the last 60 years, the Mediterranean Diet (a traditional dietary pattern) has become one of the most-studied diets in the world. Research shows time and time again the benefits in preventing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other chronic health conditions such as Alzheimer’s and depression. It’s focus is on eating whole foods, limiting processed foods, incorporating more plant based proteins, vegetables and fruit, along with eating less meat, more fish and seafood. Drizzling with olive oil and using nuts/seeds and avocados are the predominant source of oils, while limiting saturated fat. A simple yet healthy way of eating for a long and healthy life.

Seniors and Stress

Chronic stress is harmful to people of all ages, but its impact on older adults can be particularly severe, increasing the risk of age-related diseases, hastening cognitive decline, and even triggering falls. Stressors that are common amongst the elderly include loss of control, personal loss, declining health, financial worries, personal safety, and loss of independence. To reduce stress, get regular exercise, eat balanced meals to ensure the mind and body are properly fueled, and ask for help. Talking with a trusted family member, friend, or healthcare professional, at the very least, releases pent-up stress and may even lead to a solution.

Are dental implants a risky treatment?

Implant therapy is not an experimental approach; rather it is a well-proven, state-of-the-art medical dental technique that has been scientifically tested and used for decades by surgeons worldwide. Depending on the condition of each patient, potential risk factors may vary. Bad oral hygiene or limited healing of the wound due to pre-existing medical conditions (for example diabetes and osteoporosis medications i.e. Bisphosphonates) may reduce the odds of the implant remaining in place. Since every surgical procedure carries potential risks, your surgeon will evaluate whether dental implants are the option for you.
