Fitness, Fun & Friendship

The Red Deer PCN Women’s Fun Run is designed for girls and women, and now families, of all ages and fitness levels. At 6 years of age, Brooklyn is a veteran. When she crossed the 1 km finish line in 2018, her fourth year to run, she said to her Mom, “That wasn’t so bad. I need to do another.” For 2019, she has challenged herself to run the 3 km. She knows this will be harder and is already training. The 2019 event on May 11 will raise money for the Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program. Register at www.WomensFunRun.com.

Healing Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu

Jin Shin Jyutsu has been recognized in hospitals and clinics all over the world as an integrative healing practice, supporting complex health issues. It helps release blockages in energy pathways since accumulation of tension can lead to illness, disease, emotional and/or mental suffering. Areas of our bodies can be overloaded when we experience traumatic or daily stress. Through simple exercises that can be applied by a practitioner as well as oneself through gentle touch in specific places on the body, energy blockages open and allow the body to heal itself.

Trust Your Gut

Your immune system works hard to protect you from injury, illness, and disease. This process usually involves inflammation, a natural response to stress, tissue damage, and harmful stimuli like viruses, bacteria, and toxins. Inflammation functions similarly to an engine warning light, alerting you to the presence of a problem through symptoms such as heat, pain, redness, swelling, and/or loss of function. 85% of the immune system is located in our gut. An anti-inflammatory diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E and the mineral selenium provides your gut with the ingredients it needs to bolster immunity and achieve optimal mental and physical health.

Senior Strength Training

Strength training is good for balance, immune function, cardiovascular health, bone health, and more, and it’s never too late to start building muscle. Sedentary adults over the age of 50 lose an average of .4 pounds of muscle mass a year, which adds up over time. For seniors, establishing a new strength-training program should be done under the care of an experienced trainer who understands the issues people face as they age, including loss of balance, and can make modifications during weight lifting sessions. In general, seniors should train about three days per week and add more weight when it’s no longer hard to lift the weight they’ve been using.

Feel Supported

Amputees all have something in common. Going through daily life as a new amputee can be a challenge and everyone deals with it differently. A great way to help with the adjustment is to meet with other amputees who have gone through or are going through what you are. Whether it’s about dealing with daily struggles, getting back to work, or rekindling interest in recreational activities, meeting and talking with other amputees who are in a similar situation is a great way to feel supported, reassuring you that you’re not alone. Our on-site Peer Support Specialist is happy to help.

Essential Oil Review: Cajeput

Cajeput 100% Pure Joy Naturals essential oil is also known as White Tea Tree. The name Cajeput is actually the Indonesian word for ‘white wood’. This camphorous essential oil is part of the Melaleuca family and is used much in the same way as its cousin, Tea Tree. Fresh and Uplifting and a must have for treating colds and flu. (Essential Oils Natural Remedies, Althea Press) This would be an excellent oil to use in your diffuser. Add 4-5 drops to your diffuser and “Just Breathe”. Do’s and Don’ts of Dating

In today’s distracted world, where people are panicked when they don’t have instant access to their electronics, face-to-face meetings can be a foreign concept. When getting to know someone, it is important that they feel you are giving them your undivided attention. Cell phones need to be on silent and put away while on a date. Communication needs to be real. Take the time to call them and have a real conversation. Do an activity on your date where you have ample time to get to learn more about the person.

Eye Care for All-day Computer Users

Depending on the study, 50 to 90 per cent of people who are on their computers a lot experience issues with their eyes, including eye strain, red eyes, and eye twitching. Unfortunately, those of us using computers for work can’t just turn them off and walk away; we need to find ways to care for our eyes in spite of our computer use. The first step is to get an eye exam to evaluate how your eyes are doing today. After that, there are actions you can take to protect your eyes as much as possible, such as reducing ambient lighting and using floor lights rather than overhead fluorescent lights.
