Personal Reflections from our Executive Director

As I sit down to pen this article, I find myself reflecting on the multitude of experiences that have shaped my life as a Canadian elder. Born and raised in this vast and diverse land, I have witnessed the highs of prosperity to the lows of adversity. Allow me to share with you my thoughts and reflections on what it truly means to be Canadian.

First and foremost, being Canadian means embracing diversity. From the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited this land for millennia to the waves of immigrants who have made Canada their home, diversity is at the very core of who we are as a nation. As an older adult, I have had the privilege of witnessing Canada’s transformation into a multicultural society. I proudly experience diversity in Saskatoon Services for seniors’ workplace every day.

Of course, being Canadian also means weathering the storms together, both figuratively and literally. Throughout our history, time and time again, we have demonstrated resilience, unity, and compassion in the face of adversity. Whether it be rallying together to support those affected by wildfires or lending a helping hand to newcomers in need. For the past 36 years, SSFS volunteers and staff have provided services to older Canadians, stood side by side with the community to weather the ups and downs with resiliency, and we will continue to look out for each other in years to come.

As I enter a new phase of my life, I am filled with gratitude for the countless blessings that being Canadian has bestowed upon me. From the freedoms and opportunities afforded to me to the strong sense of community and belonging that I have always felt, I am proud to call Canada my home.

In closing, we at Saskatoon Services for Seniors, will continue to uphold the values of diversity, equality, and compassion that define us as Canadians for generations to come.

July Brain Teasers

.1 What gets wetter the more it dries? 2. What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years? 3. I am not alive, but I grow; I don’t have lungs, but I need air; I don’t have a mouth, but water kills me. What am I?

Hearing Aids & Summer

As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how to take care of your hearing aids. Beware of Heat! Avoid putting your hearing aids in places that attract heat quickly – like the glove compartment or console in your car. Stay Away from Moisture! Remember to take your hearing aids out before swimming or if you’re caught in the rain. Keep ‘em Clean! Warm, humid weather creates a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You can use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt and debris from your hearing aids. Follow these simple tips and get outside to enjoy the warm weather.
