National Volunteer Week

April 16 to 22 is National Volunteer Week in Canada! The theme for this years’ campaign is “Volunteering weaves us together” and we could not agree more. At the Golden Circle we rely on volunteers to help support a variety of aspects of our operations from assisting in the kitchen and dining room, to working at the front desk, to supporting special events, providing supportive transportation to medical rides, delivering groceries and frozen meals from our own kitchen, and doing friendly visiting over the phone. Join us April 16-22 as we celebrate our individual and collective actions in creating a strong, interconnected and vibrant community! Volunteering weaves us together, strengthening the fabric of our community by sharing our time, talent and energy to support one another.

Treatment for Seasonal Allergies

Spring is finally here, and that means seasonal allergies will be on the rise. Seasonal allergies develop when the immune system overreacts to something in the environment, like mold spores or pollen. Do you have any of the most common symptoms – runny nose, sneezing, itchy & watery eyes, itchy sinuses, throat, or post-nasal drip? You are most likely experiencing allergies. Your pharmacist will be happy to discuss preventing seasonal allergies and minimizing the severity of your symptoms. They will help you choose the right medication for you, how it works and how to use it.

Spring is about all things green and at Mortar and Pesto we have plenty of amazing green products to help you maintain and improve your overall health and wellbeing. We also have greens powders, sea veggies, and high-potency broccoli capsules for those who want to achieve therapeutic doses for epigenetic support. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is also liver season – a great opportunity to check out the many plant-based products we have that help the gallbladder and liver!

Did You Know?

Seniors are living longer than ever before. Advances in oral health care prevention and disease treatment mean that many seniors will have some or all of their natural teeth.
When we age, teeth undergo changes. Sometimes these changes are affected by chronic diseases and the use of medications. Some changes may include:
• Sensitive teeth – teeth can be sensitive to hot or cold foods and/or touch
• Exposed roots – gums may start to pull away from your teeth as you age. Exposed roots are exposed to bacteria that can cause cavities
• Darker or yellower teeth – the colour of teeth naturally changes with age. Also, consuming staining food and drink over a lifetime can change the colour of teeth. Plaque also builds up faster as we age and can accumulate stains.

Save the Date!

The Comox Valley Senior Support Society’s Second Annual Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, October 17 at Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay. The first Spelling Bee was such a community success that we decided to get a larger space and invite more people! We look forward to seeing you there.

Income Tax

The Senior Information and Access Services Team will once again be offering its expertise to assist seniors with their taxes! Seniors must register with CVSS to access this service (a fast and painless process!). Please contact Chris or Tiss at 250-871-5940 or [email protected] to register.
