Donations Graciously Accepted

When you are planning your end of year giving, we hope that the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre will be top of mind as your charity of choice. We are more than just a drop-in centre for older adults, we are an intergenerational gathering space and resource centre. We provide important outreach services to older adults to help them actively age in the place that is right for them by offering services such as: supportive transportation to medical appointments, grocery delivery, housekeeping, snow removal, lawn care and elder abuse support just to name a few.
Every dollar truly makes a difference to our non-profit society. You can go to our website to find a donate button through Canada Helps, or feel free to drop in for a tour and a visit with our friendly staff and volunteers.

The Golden Circle has been an important part of the Red Deer and Area community for over 45 years and your generous support is vital to allowing us to continue to do the important work we do every day for older adults in our community!

Brokered Workers Needed!

The Golden Circle has a Brokered Worker program through the Outreach Department which provides support for older adults to age in the place that is right for them. Our Outreach Coordinators receive requests from clients who may no longer be able to perform tasks around their home. An assessment is conducted along with a home visit and then the Outreach Team assigns the tasks to a screened service provider – which we are currently recruiting for! We are in dire need of Brokered Workers for Red Deer and surrounding communities for light housekeeping and lawn and snow shoveling. Reimbursement is $20.00/hr with a two (2) hour minimum charge for housekeeping, with a one hour minimum for snow shoveling and clients pay the Brokered Worker directly!
Are you interested in becoming a Brokered Worker through the Golden Circle? Connect with us for an Application Package. You will need to include a copy of your resume and three (3) references.

Sharing a Meal Improves Mental Wellbeing

Eating with others provides nutrition AND socialization, which is a great combination. As people share meals together, they share customs of their culture and their heritage. Oftentimes stories are shared over a meal that connect people with each other’s worlds. Sharing a meal together has also been shown to increase the secretion of oxytocin, so. When we choose to bond together over a meal, we are making key connections in our brain that help us regulate our emotions, and the release of oxytocin is known to aid in the digestion of foods as well – it’s win-win! Another benefit to eating with others is that when we take time to sit down at a table and engage in conversation with others, we pay more attention to what we are eating. Studies have shown that mindful eating reduces the risk of overeating which reduces the risk for health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. You don’t have to be a member to enjoy our in-house dining, but you get a discount if you are one so please, come on down to the Golden Circle, pick up a monthly calendar of events, go on a tour and join us for a meal or three; we look forward to dining with you!

Avoid Magnesium Deficiency

Did you know a third of adults are not consuming the recommended amount of magnesium? A processed diet with mainly cooked foods can lead to a magnesium deficiency. This can result in fatigue, irritability, insomnia, confusion, or poor memory. Decreased levels of magnesium can also be linked to high blood pressure, kidney stones, and heart disease. Magnesium is considered the anti-stress mineral because of its natural tranquilizer/relaxer effect on skeletal and smooth muscle, including the blood vessels and heart! Eat your dark leafy greens, legumes, nuts, and fatty fish to get more magnesium in your diet, or ask about a high quality supplement.

Travel Safe

Some destination vacations require more planning than others. A travel health consultation with your pharmacist before a trip can help you gain insight into health concerns and disease-prevention strategies. Receive personalized information on the following: Required immunizations or boosters – Health risks at your destination – Over-the-counter medications to manage symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and allergic reactions. Plan ahead and book your travel health consultation at least six to eight weeks before your trip. You can then enjoy your vacation with greater peace of mind.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

In holistic dentistry, the mouth is viewed as an integral part of the digestive tract, which is crucial to overall health. A holistic dentistry practitioner takes time to educate patients on key nutrients for systemic and emotional health, the importance of restful oxygenated sleep and proper digestion, and the dangers of infected teeth and gum inflammation. Specialized technology is used in holistic dentistry, such as PRF, ozone, lasers and CBCT imaging, to properly diagnose and manage disease. In addition, only biocompatible materials are used, as opposed to ‘tolerable’ ones such as BPA-free composites, zirconia, and no amalgam silver fillings.

Holidays with Dementia

Many older adults with Alzheimer’s or dementia enjoy and want to be included in holiday festivities. However, the added activities could cause increased agitation and confusion, unpredictable behavior, or mood swings. To create a stress-free, happy holiday season, try to scale things back and modify activities so they’ll feel calm and safe. Focus on a few of the most meaningful traditions. Ask which activities they value most. That could mean trimming the Christmas tree, lighting the menorah, singing songs, or baking special holiday treats. Even if your older adult might not remember these holiday activities later, the warm feelings they’ll have is a different kind of memory their body will carry for a while.
