National Volunteer Week

April 16 to 22 is National Volunteer Week in Canada! The theme for this years’ campaign is “Volunteering weaves us together” and we could not agree more. At the Golden Circle we rely on volunteers to help support a variety of aspects of our operations from assisting in the kitchen and dining room, to working at the front desk, to supporting special events, providing supportive transportation to medical rides, delivering groceries and frozen meals from our own kitchen, and doing friendly visiting over the phone. Join us April 16-22 as we celebrate our individual and collective actions in creating a strong, interconnected and vibrant community! Volunteering weaves us together, strengthening the fabric of our community by sharing our time, talent and energy to support one another.

Book Club: The Power of Meditation

Simple Practices for Mental Clarity and Relaxation. Have you tried to meditate but your thoughts are all over the place? Your mind wanders, you find yourself fidgeting, and what should be a source of peace and joy becomes an irritation. In this book written by Jason Hemlock, you’ll learn: The physical, mental, and emotional health benefits of meditation; Common pitfalls and how to avoid them; How to establish a meditation routine you can commit to; Five basic meditation techniques and how you can adapt them to suit your personal preferences.

Anger’s Purpose

Anger’s main purpose tells you your boundaries have been crossed! Something was said or happened that needs to shift, change or stop. Discovering the un-met need under the anger, helps you to feel more understood and allows the layers of grief, hurt, and loss to emerge. Once you discover your unmet need(s), you then have the power to do something about it. Sometimes that means withdrawing and pulling back, creating new boundaries, speaking your truth or expressing your desires and needs clearly. Finding a productive way to express and diffuse your anger by journaling, boxing, or dancing is essential. Holding onto anger is toxic on our bodies and creates havoc, ill-ness and a bitterness that pushes people away…so release and let go as a gift of kindness to yourself.

Why You Should Take a Probiotic

Probiotics are a type of organism that can help boost the number of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Historically, people had plenty of probiotics in their diets from eating fresh foods from good soil and by fermenting foods to keep them from spoiling. Today, however, because of refrigeration and agricultural practices, much of our food contains little to no probiotics in the name of sanitation, which is why high-quality supplements are recommended. What happens when you start taking probiotics? Probiotics benefits have been proven effective in supporting immune function, reducing inflammation, promoting healthy digestion, managing inflammatory bowel disease, as well as maintaining beautiful skin.

Book Club: Gentle Nutrition

A Non-Diet Approach to Healthy Eating. Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach to healthy eating that focuses on unlearning diet culture’s toxic messaging so you can build a healthier relationship with food and your body and focus on health- promoting behaviors as opposed to weight loss. When we leave diet culture behind and remove the assumption that weight equals health, we can focus on truly honoring our health and well-being.

Effectively Managing Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition and requires specific, lifelong management. It’s estimated that more than 6 million Canadians are at risk of developing diabetes. Prediabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not enough to be type 2 diabetes. Managing your health is critical to helping delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Your pharmacist can support you in managing your diabetes effectively by reviewing any current medications, educating you about diabetes symptoms to be aware of, supporting you with healthy lifestyle changes, and offering products and tools to monitor your blood glucose.
