Recognizing Oral Cancer Symptoms

Each year, 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer. When caught early, oral cancer can be effectively treated. Denturists are qualified to recognize the symptoms associated with oral cancer, as well as other oral health issues. In addition to getting regular checkups, familiarize yourself with symptoms, including: sores, particularly those that bleed or won’t heal; growths, lumps or thickened skin; trouble swallowing or chewing; pain in the tongue, jaw or throat; loose teeth; or poorly fitting dentures. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, be sure to schedule a visit with your denturist as soon as possible.

Aging At Home

Many seniors would prefer to stay at home than move into a senior care home, but there are some challenges to consider. Factors like finances, physical mobility, social network, health concerns, and safety in the home are all things to think about. If you decide to remain in your home, discuss your plans with your family or a trusted advisor. It’s important to prepare your home to ensure you can live comfortably and safely there, using various aids and tools to make things easier. In-home care can also provide much-needed day-to-day support, as well as transportation to appointments and gatherings.

Acupuncture for Seasonal Allergies

Spring is typically allergy season, because of new growth on trees and weeds. Seasonal allergies are caused by the body’s hypersensitivity to substances in the environment, and symptoms typically involve the nose and eyes. While there are many Western medications to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, they often come with unwanted side effects. Acupuncture has been used to treat seasonal allergies for centuries with great success. According to traditional medicine, treatment is directed toward clearing the nasal passages, supporting the immune system and strengthening the systems of the body to prevent allergic reactions from recurring, without side effects.

Understanding Healthy Boundaries

We thrive when we have healthy boundaries because boundaries help us identify what’s important to us, and provide us with guidelines so we can live at our fullest potential. It is helpful to identify what healthy boundaries would look like in your life and relationships. Three questions you can ask yourself are: 1) What needs or wants have I been ignoring or avoiding in this situation/relationship? 2) What actions could I take to gain a sense of autonomy/personal responsibility in this situation/relationship? 3) What would I need to communicate verbally to gain a sense of autonomy/personal responsibility in this situation/relationship?

Seniors and Stress

Chronic stress is harmful to people of all ages, but its impact on older adults can be particularly severe, increasing the risk of age-related diseases, hastening cognitive decline, and even triggering falls. Stressors that are common amongst the elderly include loss of control, personal loss, declining health, financial worries, personal safety, and loss of independence. To reduce stress, get regular exercise, eat balanced meals to ensure the mind and body are properly fueled, and ask for help. Talking with a trusted family member, friend, or healthcare professional, at the very least, releases pent-up stress and may even lead to a solution.

Smoking and Wearing Dentures?

We know that smoking can have a variety of negative effects on our health, but do you know how smoking can affect denture wearers or those with dental implants specifically? If you have dental implants and are also a smoker, your risk of dental implant failure increases. Smoking can also put you at greater risk for infection when having dental implants fitted. Healing time after any type of dental surgery is increased in smokers, since nicotine constricts your arteries and reduces blood flow to your gums. Finally, smoking can accelerate the bone loss that normally comes with losing your teeth.
