Tea Tree or Melaleuca?

It’s both! Tea tree, also known by its Latin name melaleuca, was once used to make medicinal tea. Now, it’s frequently used for its essential oil, of which there are three common types. Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree essential oil) has antibacterial and medicinal properties and is used for a variety of conditions such as lice, body odour, cold sores, and foot fungus. Melaleuca quinquenervia (niaouli essential oil) has similar disinfecting properties to tea tree essential oil, but is gentler on the skin. Melaleuca cajuputi (cajuput essential oil) actually has similar properties to eucalyptus and lemon oils.

Staying Social as a Senior

As we get older, health conditions, mobility limitations or a lack of energy can keep us from being as socially active as we once were. A diminishing social life might happen gradually as close friends experience the same conditions and family members grow busy. We may not even notice how long it has been since we last spent time with a friend! Isolation has many physical and emotional health risks. Especially if you live by yourself, staying socially active is critical to enjoying a healthy lifestyle. Volunteer at a local organization, join a senior living community or find a group that focuses on similar interests (e.g., knitting, walking, baking, golfing). Get back to living your best life!

Disability Tax Credit for Type 1 Diabetes

The Disability Tax Credit is a program designed to help those with disabilities or their caregivers reduce the amount of income tax they pay, offsetting some of the significant medical and treatment expenses. What diabetes-related activities are covered? According to CRA, the following activities qualify in the 14-hour-per-week calculation:

• Checking blood glucose levels
• Preparing and administering the insulin
• Calibrating necessary equipment
• Testing ketones
• Keeping a log book of blood glucose levels

With children, the 14-hour-per-week eligibility criteria can usually be met by combining the parent and child’s time.

T1D is an expensive disease and the disability tax credit can provide some financial relief for those who qualify.

Ways to Enjoy Meals for One

Living alone can be a truly positive experience and planning quality meals is a great way to achieve this.
Plan your week by:
• Marking down any commitments on your calendar to see your priorities and availability.
• Choosing a food theme for the week to limit your grocery shopping. For example, chicken is a great base that can be used in a week’s worth of diverse dinners!
• Planning meals that will leave you with leftovers for days when you are tired or rushed.
• Collecting single-serving recipes, or dividing the measurements for favourites in advance.

Visit Your Denturist Yearly

It’s important to see your denturist once a year to ensure oral health is maintained and the dentures have proper stability and fit. We want to avoid any damage to the tissue and oral cavity, as well as ensure the temporomandibular joint is supported by a proper vertical dimension, and centric bite is maintained. It is greatly encouraged to visit your denturist for an oral exam, because they believe that a proper fitting denture and healthy oral cavity contribute to a healthy, holistic balance within the body.

Online Dating Vs. a Matchmaker

Online dating can be exhausting, dangerous and demoralizing. Hours of searching profiles, followed by unsuccessful date after date can result in dating ‘burn out’. Furthermore, when it comes to online dating, you never know who you are really meeting. You have no idea about their actual age and relationship status, their true intentions or if they have a criminal history. Online dating can be extremely dangerous. This is why I recommend a professional matchmaker. An experienced matchmaker will introduce you to the right match, who is screened, and hand picked for you. Finding true love is important and hiring a matchmaker could be the best decision you ever make.

How to Boost Your Metabolism

Are you looking to kick-start your metabolism? Here are a few tips! 1. Build muscle. Your body always burns calories, even when you’re doing nothing. Your resting metabolic rate is much higher if you have muscle. 2. Keep drinking water. Your body needs water to process calories. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism may slow down. 3. Power up with protein. Your body burns many more calories digesting protein than it does with carbohydrates. As part of a balanced diet, replacing some carbs with lean, protein-rich foods can boost metabolism at mealtime.

Controlling Body Temperature

Did you know there are many benefits of inducing sweat regularly? In modern society, people are more dependent on an outside source controlling their body’s temperature – air conditioning. The sweat glands are the body’s natural thermal regulator. If you use them regularly, the body will be able to regulate the body’s temperature efficiently, and it can even generate more heat from inside – increasing metabolism. Japanese Thermal Therapy is a great way for someone with injuries or arthritis pain to experience perspiration without physical activity. It gently warms the body with a special stone, releasing far infrared rays and inducing sweat while easing joint pains, burning calories, and helping to detoxify.
