Exploring Options

Our co-ed pre- recovery evening program is designed for participants who may be awaiting a program in a residential setting, mandated to attend, experiencing problems and wanting to explore, if indeed there is a problem. The program is goal oriented, focused on participants’ recovery goals, whether harm reduction or abstinence, deciding to attend a residential program, or staying clean and sober while awaiting a residential program.

“Working a full-time day job limits my options for recovery programming. Exploring Options gives me the opportunity to continue working my regular hours while also working towards my recovery goals. The materials provide important information and the sessions are always interactive and engaging. Exploring Options has helped me identify my reasons for continuing my recovery journey. The support from the group and its facilitators helps me make better decisions in my day to day life and keeps me accountable. I am very grateful for the Exploring Options group!”

Free Wheelchair Skills Training

Nearly 300,000 Canadians use a wheelchair to improve their mobility. However, wheelchair users often receive very little training in how to use it effectively and efficiently. TEAM Wheels is a 4-week program designed to improve wheelchair mobility skills for activities that are most important to the participant. The program includes a self-managed training app along with 3 teleconference sessions with a peer trainer (an experienced wheelchair user). All training happens at home, using a computer tablet provided during the 4-week training period. The program is being offered as part of a research study, so it is entirely free for participants.

Adjusting to Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are dentures that are inserted into a patient’s mouth immediately after their teeth are removed. In fact, this will allow you to immediately begin learning to eat and speak with your new teeth. The advantage of immediate dentures is that you can walk away with a full smile immediately following the removal of natural teeth. However, because immediate dentures are inserted right after your dental surgery, the gums and jaw will change shape as they heal so it may be necessary to have an immediate denture adjusted. Having sore spots is normal and the denture will need to be adjusted by your denturist when they appear.

Ask Dr. Tyler Anderson OD

Q. What is Macular Degeneration?
A. Macular Degeneration, also known as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), is a medical condition which may result in blurred or no vision in the center of the visual field. You cannot see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far. But your peripheral vision will still be normal. For instance, imagine you are looking at a clock with hands. With AMD, you might see the clock’s numbers but not the hands. You are more likely to develop AMD if you: eat a diet high in saturated fat, are overweight, smoke cigarettes, are over 50 years old, have hypertension, or have a family history of AMD.
