Sleep Hygiene – Ending Insomnia

When insomnia is ongoing, try altering your sleep habits. There is ample clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of a concept called Sleep Hygiene – recommendations that help with the specific aim of improving sleep quality. Even a few slight adjustments can mean the difference between sound sleep and a restless night. Have a bedtime routine, let your body know it’s time to sleep. Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed and avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol. Create a restful bedroom environment that is cool, dark and quiet. Schedule ‘worry’ time for the next day and go to bed worry-free!

Keep Your Cat’s Mind Sharp

Cats kept indoors live much longer than cats that roam outside, but they also need more stimulation to keep their minds sharp. From kittenhood, you should provide your cat with things that keep them mentally fit, such as scratching posts, a variety of toys, and puzzles for play and mealtime. As cats age, continue to spend time playing with them, and keep them occupied with access to a window and vertical spaces for them to climb. You can also work on training your cat throughout their lifetime when it comes to things like walking on a leash, for example.

Stay Warm with Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage involves the application of water-heated basalt stones to key points on the body, creating sensations of comfort and warmth. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing greater intensity and deeper pressure than with regular massage. Cool marble stones are used as a contrast to create a deep circulatory effect within the body. Some of the benefits of hot stone massage include: helps relieve muscle tension and pain, may help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases like fibromyalgia and arthritis, reduces stress and anxiety, promotes deep relaxation, encourages better sleep, and may boost immunity.

Ask Dr. Tyler Anderson OD

Q. What exactly is Dry Eye?
A. “Dry Eye” is a condition in which symptoms include dryness, scratching, burning and a “foreign body sensation” caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication of the eye’s front surface. Poor tear quality and/or quantity can also cause blurred vision and less enjoyment of visual tasks such as reading. Treatment options include lubricating eye drops and applying a warm washcloth to the lids while lightly massaging to release oils from the glands along the eyelid rims. Visit your optometrist who can help identify the cause of your dry eye symptoms and recommend the best therapy options.

Keep a Healthy Home This Winter

As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to help keep your household warm and cozy in order to keep your loved ones comfortable and healthy. With colder temperatures approaching, it’s a good time to consider the health of your home’s furnace. As a rule of thumb, if your furnace is older than 15 years, or it needs frequent repairs, it may be time for a replacement. Scheduled tune-up services are essential for thwarting off the need for repairs, especially emergency service. Regular maintenance makes it possible for a heating expert to monitor your furnace and make minor repairs and adjustments along the way. This keeps your system in the healthiest condition possible.
