Volunteer Opportunities

We currently run our club with one staff member, in addition to our class instructors, so we are extremely grateful and reliant on our member volunteers to help us with running our programs. We are always looking for talented individuals that can share their crafty side for new programming as we develop more activities. Interested in giving back? Whatever your skill or your age, we can find a place for you. To find out how you can help, call 204-416-1067 or email us at [email protected]. Remember we are a club of people that look out for each other, and volunteering is an important way to give back!

Referred by Your Physician

Waiting for your Cancer PET/CT imaging appointment? Cancer doesn’t stop & wait with you. That’s why people choose to have PET/CT imaging done privately. Receiving these reports sooner allows for treatment to start sooner. PET/CT assists with: CANCER – detecting cancer, revealing cancer spread, confirming cancer treatment effectiveness, finding a cancer recurrence. BRAIN DISORDERS – clarifying early diagnosis of dementia, confirming possible Alzheimer’s diagnosis. HEART DISEASE – Confirming cardiac sarcoidosis presence/recurrence. If you have been referred by your physician for a PET/CT scan and are waiting for your appointment it may be time to ask your oncologist, urologist, or GP to make a referral to INITIO Medical. Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

Heat exhaustion can lead to brain damage, organ failure, and death. Here are a few tips and reminders to keep your pets safe. Don’t let them play hard on hot days and make sure they have access to fresh water. Before walking your pets, test the temperature of the pavement. If you can’t hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds, it is too hot for your pets’ pads. Never leave your pet in a vehicle, even for “just a minute” while you run errands. Studies have shown that, even with the windows partially open, interior temperatures can rise to over 38 C in about 7 minutes at 31 C.

Improve Your Focus & Concentration Naturally

Very often the brain and nervous system become fatigued and overloaded. Much like a computer receiving too much data all at once, the brain can become overwhelmed, slow down, or even crash. This can result in an inability to focus, brain fog, memory loss, ADD/ADHS-like symptoms, a “wired” feeling, or the inability to cope with daily life. Alternative approaches such as Biofeedback testing and treatment are highly effective in improving focus and concentration. It detects imbalances, or weaknesses, in the stress handling areas of the body, and in turn, stimulates the affected areas to help the mind and body better function in times of overload, overwhelm, and fatigue.

Food that Improves Brain Health

While you may not be able to completely prevent or stop cognitive decline as you age, you can reduce your risk by eating a well-balanced diet that supports cognitive functioning. Similar to other types of muscles in the body, the brain needs protein, healthy fats, and hydration to function. We’ve put together a list of brain-boosting foods for seniors: Omega-3 fatty acid foods – salmon, trout, anchovies, sardines, chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts.
Berries. Turmeric. Dark chocolate. Nuts – almonds, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts. Do you have questions about senior nutrition? Download our FREE eBook at hearttohomemeals.ca.

Prevent Hearing Loss

Protecting your hearing is the best way to prevent hearing loss. Custom hearing solutions are available to match any lifestyle. For example; *Water Enthusiasts – Swimming or simply taking a shower can result in water trapped inside the ear canal, potentially resulting in irritation or infection. Custom hearing protection keeps the water out. *Hunters – A single gunshot can cause permanent hearing loss. Custom hearing protection is specially designed to prevent against impulse noise. *Music lovers – Listen to music with custom hearing protection that maintains the sound quality and allows you to enjoy rich, natural sound.

DIY vs Professional Teeth Whitening

Over-the-counter products have the potential to whiten the teeth, but these products are vastly inferior to professional teeth whitening performed at the dentist’s office. The main differences between in-store and in-office bleaching are the properties and percentage of the peroxide tooth bleaching solution, and custom trays made in house. In-store tooth bleach is weaker and therefore not as effective in removing stains. We fit you with a custom tray, which enables the bleach solution to reach the crevices of your teeth which would otherwise be missed by whitening strips. As well, custom fitted trays pose less risk of leakage of the bleach solution to the surrounding tissues which can cause irritation.

Men and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, a disease that renders bones porous and frail, causes over 30,000 hip fractures annually in Canada. While most people associate osteoporosis with women, around 25% of these fractures occur in men. To help prevent osteoporosis, make sure to exercise regularly, suited to your health. This will encourage bone cell renewal. If you are not getting enough nutrients from your food, you may require a dietary supplement such as calcium and vitamin D, which are crucial for bone health.
