I often refer to the ego as “everybody’s got one”; now our bigger choice and decision in life is what we do with it and how we use it. The ego’s function helps us distinguish between right and wrong and make sense of our world. No human being escapes the challenges of life, as it is the lessons and learnings that make us become conscious and grow us emotionally and spiritually. Some lessons we see coming, others arrive on our doorstep as a complete surprise. All require us to sort through our grief, loss, disappointment, hurt, anger, shame, and jealousy into clarity. When we get too bogged down and stuck in our emotional pain and begin to identify with our negative beliefs without fully releasing them, we are at risk of becoming our story and staying a victim to it. Lightening our load helps free the ego into expansiveness!
N.E.A.T. Ways of Being Healthy
While you may be enjoying the summer weather by exercising outside (running, cycling, or playing sports), it is also important to consider a concept called N.E.A.T. (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). N.E.A.T. focuses on any physical activity that does not necessarily have to be planned exercise. This may include gardening or mowing the lawn, going out for an evening stroll, or playing outdoors with your kids or grandchildren. Ultimately, the main goal is to be active and to continue moving, which will burn extra calories, and in turn, contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
Degenerative Arthritis Isn’t Simple
Cartilage can regenerate from damage. However, this process is slow because there’s no blood circulation in the tissue. Deficiency in lubricant surrounding the joint, called synovial fluid, aggravates the damage. The reduction of the lubricant also happens as part of the aging process. Cartilage damage causes inflammation that results in pain and difficulty in mobilization. Analgesics (natural or not) relieve the inflammation, but don’t promote regeneration. So, relying on analgesics alone for arthritis may end up aggravating the current damage, as the reduction of the pain tends to encourage the patient to use the damaged joint more frequently.
Avoiding Heat Injury and Dehydration
Heat injury can happen with strenuous exercise and excessive sweating, ranging from heat cramps to heat stroke. Dehydration occurs when an individual does not take in enough water, resulting in signs such as dry mouth, dizziness, weakness, headaches, and less/darker urine. A great hydration guideline for exercise: 500ml of water 30 minutes to 2 hours before exercise, 250ml every 15 minutes during exercise, and 500ml after exercise for every pound lost in body weight. Remember to add an electrolyte/carbohydrate concentration of 6-8% during exercise and 10-12% after exercise. Adding 1/2 – 1 tsp of salt to your water is one way to replace electrolytes.
Is Your Child Bored?
Boredom signals a child’s need for physical and/or mental activity to keep them occupied, and to release some energy. When children are bored, they are more likely to participate in negative behaviours, because they are not feeling physically or emotionally challenged. Luckily, there are many activities available in our city that children can partake in to release their energy and learn new components and skills. These include outdoor pools, parks and splash pads, community centres, and children’s entertainment centres. Attending summer camp or going to children-friendly museums can also help keep your child entertained throughout the summer.

Know Your Food Labels
We can all relate to having a hectic schedule, and sometimes (or often) making food choices based on options that are quick and easy to prepare. However, in many cases, these convenient foods are packed full of unhealthy additives, GMOs and chemicals. To make shopping even more confusing, sometimes foods labeled as “organic” are not the healthiest option, as they can be full of excess sugar, fat or fillers. Fortunately, with a little extra mindfulness, learning to look at labels can pay off big rewards for healthier eating. Here are some tips: 1. Fill up on fibre, not fillers. 2. Opt for good fats whenever possible. 3. Don’t choose foods with long ingredient labels.
