The Eyes and Ears Connection

As we age, we’re more susceptible to hearing loss and vision changes. According to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), you’re at greater risk of social isolation and reduced community participation if you have vision loss. The same goes for hearing loss. Having both a vision and a hearing problem can affect your ability to lip-read, which is detrimental to communicating with co-workers, family, and friends. A decreased ability to socialize is linked to a greater risk of dementia. However, Statistics Canada reports that 90 percent of people with hearing loss can improve communication with a properly fitting hearing aid, counselling, or environmental changes.

Tips for a Teething Puppy

Puppies are adorable, but teething can be a difficult time for both him and your family. Introducing your puppy to age-appropriate dog chew toys early can save your precious household items. Chew toys designed for puppies are a little smaller and softer than the adult toys are, because puppy teeth are more prone to fracture. Ensure your new dog is getting a properly balanced diet, including vitamins and minerals such as calcium, so that his new adult teeth can develop normally. Having two teeth crowded into a space meant for one can cause discomfort and possibly initiate some destructive tendencies in your pup.

Tired of Being Sick and Tired?

Science has linked poor sleeping habits with all kinds of health problems, from weight gain to a weakened immune system, to many chronic health conditions. Practicing good sleep hygiene can help to obtain that better quality of sleep. Follow a regular sleep schedule, develop a relaxing bedtime routine, and create an environment that helps you doze off. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and glowing electronic screens in the hours before bed. If sleep still remains a struggle, Access BARS may help by releasing stress in the body and mind, and providing more clarity, focus, and joy, all of which can help improve sleep.

Taking Time to Breathe

Chronic stress floods the brain with powerful hormones that are meant for short-term emergency situations. This can cause damage to your brain, narrowing your ability to think clearly, function effectively, and enjoy life. Simply taking a few deep breaths over the course of your day can reduce your stress and help the brain and body to check in. Breathing in allows the brain to scan the body and find areas of stress or tension, and help to prevent health issues from arising. Breathing out can help you let go of the day-to-day issues that bring up those chronic stress situations.

Contemporary Neurofascial Blade Massage

Contemporary neurofascial blade massage is based on the traditional techniques of Gua Sha. Its core purpose was to “induce crisis to hasten the resolution of disease” by using a specific tool to massage the area by countering internal inflammation. These short stroking techniques were used along with traditional acupuncture to treat pain. These same traditional tools stimulate piczo (electrical current) and spread the interstitial fluid along connective tissue planes (increasing local blood flow) with light, gentle, repetitive strokes. This offers another method to decrease inflammation manually.

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines

Depending on your age, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) has different guidelines that you should follow. Adults aged 18-64 should get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly. Adding muscle and bone strengthening activities at least two times a week is also recommended. The same amounts are recommended for adults over the age of 65, with the addition of activities to improve balance and prevent falls. Exercise can be accumulated in increments of 10 minutes or more. Moderate intensity activities can cause you to sweat a little and breathe harder. Always check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
