Smell The Roses!

Spring is in the air! Wouldn’t it be great if you could smell it? Studies show that smokers lose some of their ability to smell. That can make life a lot less pleasurable. If you lose your sense of smell, you can’t appreciate the scent of spring flowers or freshly mowed lawn. Eating becomes a lot less rewarding too, since aroma contributes a great deal to the flavor of food. Life could even become more dangerous, since you may be less able to detect the odor of a gas leak or a house fire. There is some good news, however: Quit smoking and your sense of smell quickly returns.

The Obstacle is The Way

How many times have we avoided doing something because someone or something placed an obstacle in our path? Likely more times than you want to admit. Here’s the thing. It doesn’t matter whether the obstacle is mental, physical, lacking a particular skill, or a limiting belief. None of these is true. How is it that a mountain can be moved with a belief the size of a mustard seed? That mountain IS the limiting belief we have about ourselves and the purpose of the obstacle. When we encounter obstacles we allow ourselves to discover what we are made of. To reveal and break free of self-sabotaging behaviours. This month we take on the obstacles in our lives as we develop tactics to overcome them.

Is Food Affecting Your Mood?

Did you know the food you’ve been eating could be contributing to your anxiety, depression, or other mental health struggles? You probably already know that sugar, caffeine, and alcohol are highly likely to affect your mood and behaviour, but food sensitivities can also create imbalances in key chemicals in the brain and gut. If you’re eating foods that cause you digestive issues, low energy, increased cravings and sleep problems, it could be due to food sensitivities. This doesn’t mean you need to avoid these foods long term, but it’s an important piece of the puzzle when uncovering the root cause of your mental health struggles.

The Painless Facelift

A microcurrent facial is often referred to as a “natural” facelift. This safe and painless facial helps erase fine lines and wrinkles, while firming your skin and defining your features. A microcurrent facial emits extremely low-voltage electrical currents (hence, ‘micro’ current), which mirror your own body’s electrical currents, on a cellular level to repair damaged skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Cosmetic microcurrent is beneficial for improvement in the appearance of aged and slackened skin, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, dark circles and puffiness, enlarged pores, and muscle tone.

Enriching the Life of Your Pet

Keeping your pet in good physical shape is an important part of their wellness, but it’s crucial to provide mental stimulation and enrichment for them as well. Depending on the breed and personality of your dog, a walk doesn’t always provide enough stimulation. Drop-in visits from a pet sitter give your dog the opportunity for an extra play session during the day. For high energy dogs, or those needing more socialization, daycare is a great option. Even if it’s not every day, it gives your dog something to look forward to during the week. There are also many cognitive enrichment toys and puzzles you can purchase for your dogs, cats and birds to keep their minds sharp.

Lost Your Marbles?

One of the most common types of dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which can cause the sensation of spinning, vertigo, nausea and/or imbalance that lasts for seconds or minutes. These symptoms are triggered by head movements or rolling over in bed. This is caused by calcium carbonate crystals (ear rocks, small marbles) inside the inner ear moving to areas where they don’t belong. A qualified physiotherapist uses specific maneuvers of moving the head into certain positions to return these crystals back to the chamber where they should be. These treatments are very effective in most cases.

Your Annual Denture Check-up

Has it been a while since you’ve last had your dentures checked? Full dentures, partial dentures, and dental implants all need the same level of care as natural teeth. If you wear dentures or have implants, it doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for maintaining great oral health. Routine checkups help prevent any major oral problems from developing and allow for planning any changes your dentures require to ensure you’re never without your teeth. With yearly checkups, your dentures and implants will continue to perform properly and your maintained oral health will mean shorter and smoother visits!

Cloudy Vision?

When a cloudy area develops within the normally clear lens of your eye, it is called a cataract. Cataracts normally occur gradually with aging due to composition changes in the lens, but can also be caused more quickly by trauma, environmental triggers, and rarely due to congenital origins. Indications that a cataract may be forming include haziness and blurred, distorted or even double vision; an increasing need for more light; and sensitivity to bright light and glare, especially at night. During your eye examination, your optometrist will analyze for any opacity in the lens of your eye, to determine if you are developing a cataract.
