Housekeeping Services

Saskatoon Services for Seniors offers housekeeping services for all seniors in Saskatoon. Our staff is screened and fully insured. We are here to assist with many household cleaning services such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, dusting, and wall washing. We only provide the services that you require and as such only have a one hour minimum for each appointment. We can provide weekly service, bi-weekly services or just when you need us. The fee involved is based on the senior’s income to keep costs manageable for low-income households. Call us to check availability.

Lawn Cutting Now Operational

Winter kept coming back this year. But it seems somebody finally got Jack Frost some NyQuil and we can resume cutting your lawns. We’re very happy to be able to provide this service for you. We offer Weekly and Bi-Weekly, or Call-In services for those who only need it occasionally. We can send out a sign-up form in regular mail or e-mail. You can even pick one up from our office and either fill it out here or get it to us later. A huge thanks for the donations and volunteers which allowed us to start quicker.

Grocery Delivery Program

Regardless of age, we all need to eat. But those groceries can be heavy, and the store can be busy and loud. Or you might not have time for it amidst all your other appointments and obligations. So let us shop on your behalf by joining our grocery program. Our members can phone or e-mail us on Monday and provide us with a detailed shopping list and a store to go to. We will buy what you need and deliver it to you. We can even buy non-food items like yarn or cutlery. And you’re not obligated to order every week. Some people even only order once to get that item from a store that’s too far from home. But slots are limited (another reason why our volunteers are so important) so contact us for more information.

Delightful Food Tip: Rice Cooker Eggs

Speaking of groceries, did you know that you can make eggs in a rice cooker? It’s so simple! Just fill it to the low mark with water and place your eggs in the steamer basket for 30-35 minutes. They’re very hot when they come out so use your oven mitts or tongs. Placing them in an ice bath for a few seconds will cause the shells to crack without cooling down the eggs, a process known as thermal expansion. Then it’s easy to peel them and enjoy with any topping you desire. I switch between chili powder, salt and black pepper, or paprika. Eggs are one of the most versatile foods to ever come from a farm. Don’t have eggs or a rice cooker? We can help. See the Grocery Delivery Program section above.

The ABC’s of Caring for Aging Loved Ones

It’s important to act promptly when changes in aging conditions arise, whether it’s a shift in attitude, behavior, or cognition. Prioritize your loved one’s comfort, safety, and overall wellbeing by exploring care options with family and trusted advisors. In-home care offers a personalized approach and provides support to family caregivers. Care professionals assist with daily tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, and light housekeeping, while also providing companionship and socialization. Proactive care can enhance quality of life, prevent unnecessary decline, and enable individuals to remain in their own home while receiving necessary support. Consider the advantages of in-home care and choose a provider that aligns with your family’s needs and values.

Summer Sun Safety

Here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe in the sun this summer! 1) Check the UV index daily – higher numbers mean more sun protection is needed. 2) Limit your time in the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. 3) Seek shade as much as possible. 4) Cover up with tightly woven and loose-fitting clothing, as well as a wide-brimmed hat. 5) Wear sunglasses. 6) Use a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or 30, and reapply at least every 2 hours. 7) Know the early signs of skin cancer.

In all cases, the impairment must be prolonged. Also, the person must meet one of the following criteria: 1. Is markedly restricted in at least one of the basic activities of daily living. 2. Is significantly restricted in two or more or the basic activities of daily living (can include a vision impairment). 3. Needs life-sustaining therapy. The credit can allow a person $2,500 in tax savings each year as well as a $25,000 Lump Sum Refund. Expert help is available in applying for this substantial tax credit.
