Disability Tax Credit for Arthritis
During Arthritis Awareness Month, it’s essential to recognize the challenges that those with arthritis face, particularly in walking and dressing. These daily activities can become daunting tasks due to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Fortunately, the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is available to help alleviate some of the financial burden. As a DTC specialist, I assist individuals in navigating the complex application process, ensuring they receive the support they deserve. This tax credit can make a significant difference, offering financial relief that can be used toward medical treatments, mobility aids, and adaptive clothing.
Arthritis: Active Living Strategies
Managing arthritis means optimizing mobility and slowing disease progression with medications. Consult your pharmacist for pain relief and joint stiffness remedies. Patience is key, as medication effects might take weeks. Adaptation is crucial – shorten walks, take a chair yoga class, or explore gentler hobbies. Occupational therapists offer aids for pursuits you cherish. Exercise is vital, especially swimming and walking, which boost joint movement and muscle strength. Stay socially active through activities like swimming and exercise programs. Maintain joint health through exercise, a balanced diet, and supplements. Combat interference with daily life using anti-inflammatories, hot/cold therapy, and aids. Prioritize self-care for a fulfilling life despite arthritis challenges.
Keeping Pets Healthy and Homebound
At Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS), our mission is to foster strong, healthy bonds between families and their pets. With shelters often at capacity, we’re partnering with the community to keep pets where they belong—at home. By offering accessible healthcare options and collaborating with the local food bank to provide pet food, MJHS is ensuring that pets remain with the families who love them. This proactive approach not only promotes the well-being of animals but also strengthens our community, keeping pets out of shelters and in the homes they cherish.
Infrared Sauna Therapy: Relax and Heal
If you have asthma or arthritis and can’t engage in strenuous exercise, the far infrared sauna at Fit 4 Life is a great alternative. The radiant heat increases heart rate, promoting cardiovascular fitness and lowering cholesterol, similar to regular exercise. Far infrared therapy also aids in weight loss, boosts metabolism, and alleviates joint stiffness and inflammation. Regular sessions offer numerous health benefits, allowing you to relax and enjoy the natural wellness that comes with each visit. Experience the power of infrared therapy at Fit 4 Life!
Shopping Delivery Program
Groceries can be heavy, and the stores can be very busy and hard to navigate, so let us shop on your behalf by joining our grocery program. Our members can phone or e-mail us Monday and provide us with a detailed shopping list and a store to go to. We will buy what you need and deliver it to you. We can even buy non-food items like yarn or cutlery. Maybe a gift for yourself or a loved one? If you could use a little help in getting your grocery items, please let us know and we’ll sign you up for this wonderful program.
Volunteers Needed!
Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this by helping seniors to remain in their own homes safely for as long as possible. Our very popular Grocery Delivery program is in full swing. We encourage anyone with a heart of gold who likes shopping to volunteer with us so that seniors in our community can continue to live independently in their homes. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping seniors in our community, please contact our office today. All help is greatly appreciated.
Good Posture Can Prevent Pain & Injuries
Having good posture makes you look strong and healthy and it’s also a critical factor in preventing pain and injuries. For recreational activities like golf, skating, yoga or running, posture actually plays an important role in performance. Posture is critical in preventing workplace injuries that come from repetitive stress or sitting at a desk in front of a computer all day. Physiotherapists can help you discover how to improve your posture by demonstrating positions and stretches for when you start to feel the tension in your body. Make the move to see a physiotherapist!
September Brain Teasers
1. Lose me once I’ll come back stronger, lose me twice I’ll leave forever, what am I? 2. What is the difference between a person with a terrible toothache and a rainy day? 3. A Buddhist went to the dentist for a root canal, but he refused Novocain, why?
Arthritis Awareness Month
September is Arthritis awareness month, and we have a few tips to help reduce the symptoms of this painful disease that affects 1 in 5 people.
1. Exercise and weight loss – Yoga is a great form of exercise that can help to loosen up the joints and reduce the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.
2. Watch your diet – avoiding alcohol and foods high in purines will help to lessen the build up of uric acid, which causes crystals in the joints and increase pain and discomfort
3. Anti-inflammatories – Anti-inflammatories can help to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Common anti-inflammatories are Advil, Motrin and Naproxen.
4. Heat or Cold – Placing heating pads or ice packs on the joints can help to reduce inflammation and relieve joint discomfort
5. Mobility Aids – Using canes, shoe inserts, walkers, raised toilet seats, and other assistive devices can help protect joints and improve your ability to perform daily tasks.
Urban Camp
Saskatoon Services for Seniors provides affordable winter snow removal through a partnership with the Ministry of Justice’s Urban Camp program. This program involves supervised inmate crews who assist with various services.
The Urban Camp program offers clients:
• Spring and fall yard cleaning, including leaf and debris bagging.
• Snow shoveling for walks, driveways, and city sidewalks, with services typically completed within 72 hours (3 days) after an average snowfall, and up to 5 days for heavy snowfalls.
