Are You Always in ‘Fight or Flight’ Mode?

Massage therapy is undeniably effective at getting people tapped in to their parasympathetic nervous system, which is more commonly called ‘rest and digest’. Unfortunately, many spend most of their days in ‘fight or flight’! When the parasympathetic nervous system is in charge, blood pressure and heart rate lower, breathing is fuller, oxygen and blood make it deeper into the body, tissues repair themselves, organs do their jobs better, and overall, mental health is much more relaxed and content. It’s not hard to understand why being in ‘rest and digest’ is more conducive to recovery, management and being better prepared to handle what life throws at us!

With the warmer weather arriving, why not get outside and go for a walk? Walking outdoors offers a number of mental and physical health benefits. The most obvious benefit is helping you stay fit by improving your circulation, reducing your blood pressure, boosting your metabolism, improving your balance and coordination, and strengthening your bones and muscles. Outdoor walks also help lift your mood by helping your brain release chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, which can make you feel happier. Going for a stroll outdoors is a great stress reliever and can even help to improve your creativity!

Clean Eating: Prairie Buddha Bowl

Dressing: ½c. Cashew Hummus. 1c. Kefir, plain. 1 tsp salt. Bowl: 2c. cooked Lentils, drained and cooled. 2½c. chopped kale leaves. ¼ tsp salt and black pepper. Bowl Garnishes: 1½ c. diced beets, cooked. 1 c diced cooked sweet potato, 2.c sliced cucumber. ½c. cup apple. ½c. Cottage Cheese. Place dressing ingredients in a bowl and whisk. Combine lentils, kale, salt and pepper in a bowl. Add desired amount of dressing and mix well. Divide the salad onto the bottoms of four bowls. Drizzle extra dressing on top.
