Coping with Loss

When your loved ones reach a certain age, deaths and funerals become common place; scanning the obituaries becomes a morning habit. Dealing with these losses can take a toll. Funerals play an important part in honouring and remembering the life of someone who was important to you. The living can come together, support each other and share their grief. If your loved one has recently attended a funeral, talking about what they liked or did not like about it, may lead to not only discovering what their wishes are for their funeral, but can help them cope with the loss they have just experienced.

Prostate Cancer and Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has plenty of benefits, including lower stress, improved sleep, increased lung capacity, and reduced pain. A study published in Medical News Today suggests those benefits may now extend to men undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Although an effective treatment for men with prostate cancer, radiation therapy can have side effects that impair their quality of life. The study found that with yoga sessions throughout the course of radiation therapy, the quality of life of men participating in the study remained consistent, while fatigue severity greatly improved. Dealing with Emotional Inflammation

Unprocessed emotions such as grief and worry can often lead to what is termed “emotional inflammation”. When an emotion is suppressed for any reason, it can lead to physical ailments such as depression and anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and even pain throughout our body. Accepting these emotions and learning to process them can be difficult and we often numb ourselves chemically or behaviourally. However, we can incorporate positive changes into our lives to help process emotions. Homeopathy can help with the physical symptoms, as well as learning to accept, process, and release emotions from our physical body, allowing ourselves to heal

Keeping Your Prostate Healthy

Maintaining a healthy prostate is important for managing conditions like prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as well as potentially reducing the risk of prostate cancer. Some symptoms that may occur with a prostate condition include urgency, frequency and pain during urination, weak urine flow, fatigue, back pain, and blood in the urine/semen. Naturopathic doctors can provide support to those experiencing prostate conditions (including helping to reduce some treatment side effects) through nutritional support (dietary journal and guidance for proper diet), acupuncture, Bemer Therapy (increases microcirculation), intravenous nutrient therapy, and sweat detoxification through sauna and hyperthermia.

Music Therapy and Neuroscience

McGill Unversity’s Dr. Daniel Levitin has found that as a result of exposure to music, levels of immunoglobin A, an antibody linked to immunity, increases. In another study he found significant evidence of music’s anti-anxiety properties. Montreal Neurological Institute’s Dr. Zatorre has found that a brain structure called the striatum is stimulated by music to release dopamine which increases feelings of pleasure. Music therapists are continually training to integrate and apply research findings into practice in order to better serve people of every age, from babies to Alzheimer’s patients.
