A Healthy Anaerobic/Aerobic System

Cardiovascular exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate. One myth in today’s fitness world is that increasing cardio can only be achieved through lengthy steady state activities such as running or using an elliptical machine for extended periods of time. If you ONLY run or use the elliptical in that slow, steady state, you are ignoring your anaerobic system. You could run faster for short bouts to access this system or you could do some metabolic resistance training. It’s a more efficient and effective way to target both your anaerobic and aerobic systems and you can challenge all of your muscles, not just those in your lower body. Using your preferred method of resistance (weights, bands, bodyweight) will target both systems and increase metabolic conditioning in a fraction of the time compared to the traditional “cardio” methods.

Words to Live By

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent van Gogh

New Year, New Opportunities

With all of the gatherings, parties, and festivities happening over the holidays, being single can feel frustrating when you’re surrounded by happy couples. But with a new year comes new opportunities to make a connection. Everyone is looking to start fresh with the coming of the new year, whether it be getting their health back on track, making a change in their career, or finding someone special to share their time with. Be open and optimistic when it comes to love in the new year, and consider working with a professional matchmaker to get the results you want.

Hearing Loss and Depression

Research continues to prove a strong connection between hearing loss and depression. The two are referred to as invisible conditions, as you cannot see their effects at first glance. Because of this, their effects can often go unacknowledged, unrecognized, and untreated. Hearing loss affects one’s ability to communicate, which can cause stress, fatigue, social isolation, and, in turn, depression. Along with depression, clients with untreated hearing loss are known to experience anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, stress, and other negative emotions. However, hearing aids have been found to help combat these issues.

Exercise Helps Manage Hormones

Hormones contribute to all aspects of our wellbeing, and it’s important that our bodies produce the right amounts. Mood swings, loss of strength, and a lower libido – all are common among people over 50 because of hormonal changes. Exercise can lessen symptoms brought by changing hormones – while also boosting quality of life, lowering aches and pains, and bringing countless physical and mental benefits. “Hormones are substances produced by your endocrine glands that have a tremendous effect on bodily processes,” says WebMD. “They affect growth and development, mood, sexual function, reproduction, and metabolism.” For more information check out our blog at proACTIVEfit.ca

Coping with Senior Isolation

One of the biggest issues for seniors is that their social circles begin to shrink as the years go by. Friends, significant others and family members move or pass away. Even those who still live close may be inaccessible due to limited mobility, especially once a senior can no longer drive safely. Age-related changes in one’s physical condition, such as hearing loss, can make it so difficult to communicate that it doesn’t seem worth the effort anymore. Local senior centers or agencies are great resources providing home-visitation services as well as community transportation and outings. Do you have a loved one who may be lonely? Try to put in more effort to spend time with them.
