Cavity and Dental Disease Prevention

A cavity happens when bacteria in the mouth produces acid that attacks your teeth. Over time, this acid can dissolve away the tooth enamel and cause a hole, or cavity. Unlike some other diseases or injuries, a cavity will not heal by itself, but if the early signs of dental decay are promptly treated before a cavity forms, it can be stopped or even reversed by your dentist and your home care. To prevent dental disease: brush twice a day, floss once a day, eat a balanced diet, limit eating and drinking between meals, and visit your dentist regularly.

Take Care of Seasonal Allergies

Spring is the worst season for allergies, according to the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen. Trees, grasses, and weeds release these tiny spores into the air to fertilize other plants. When they get into the nose or eyes of someone who’s allergic, they send the body’s defenses haywire. If pollen is a trigger, keep doors and windows closed to keep it out, and wear wraparound sunglasses when outside. Also, ask your doctor or pharmacist about the most appropriate allergy medications to avoid possible side effects, such as drowsiness and confusion.

5 ways healthy hearing can improve your life

“Do you want to go out for dinner?”

That’s a question that always deserves an enthusiastic “Yes!”

But what if you stop yourself from enjoying a restaurant dinner because you find it too hard to follow a conversation in a noisy environment?

There have been tremendous advances in hearing aid technology since your grandparents’ day. Hearing aids can be highly customized to adapt to specific types of hearing loss and they are so discreet, they are barely noticeable.

Here are five reasons why getting your hearing tested will lead to a happier, more fulfilling life

  1. You’ll say yes more often

Two people feel badly when you have to say “no” to an invitation. You, and the person doing the asking. Think of how much better you’ll feel when you can embrace new opportunities — and try out that new restaurant everyone’s raving about.

  1. No more excuses

It can be difficult to explain why you are isolating yourself. Sometimes you make up reasons not to join friends or family at events. It’s hard for them to understand why, especially since all they want is to spend time with you.

  1. You’ll feel more in control of your life

We waste a lot of energy finding ways to cope with awkward situations. It’s better to turn the awkward situation into a positive one. You’ll be glad you’re doing something about your hearing loss — and others will be, too.

  1. Only actors get applause for pretending to be someone they’re not

Stop nodding your head to make people think you understand what they’re saying. Chances are they haven’t been fooled.

  1. You can live in the moment

You have the right to feel fully involved in life. Your life. It wears you down to keep saying, “Pardon? Can you repeat that?” The only thing that needs repeating is time spent enjoying the company of others.

If you think it’s time to start living life in the fullest, or know someone who needs a gentle nudge, book your free HearingLife consultation here or call 1-833-776-4733

Music and Dementia

The effects of dementia are devastating to individuals and their families. Researchers are keen to find ways to ease its symptoms and restore abilities and memory. Studies on music and dementia have shown promising findings. Did you know that the area of the brain associated with musical memory tends to be least affected by dementia? Music therapy may help reduce cognitive decline while improving the memory of people with dementia. In one study, test subjects performed better on memory tests when they listened to music. It has also been found that the emotional content of music can bring back emotional memories.

Pain From Your Mattress?

The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7 to 10 years, but physical changes such as weight loss, injury, or surgery can alter your body’s position when you sleep and make a mattress change necessary before your mattress reaches its end of life. If your mattress no longer provides adequate support, it can lead to a poor sleeping posture. This misaligns the spine and strains muscles, causing or worsening lower back pain. It’s important to choose a mattress that not only supports your back and provides comfort, but also meets your personal preferences, so you can get the best, pain-free night’s sleep possible.
