Book Club: Ultra-Processed People

Ultra-Processed People by Dr. Chris van Tulleken explores how ultra-processed foods shape our health, appetite, and society. The book explains how these foods are engineered to be addictive, disrupt metabolism, and contribute to obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease. Drawing on science, personal experience, and public health research, van Tulleken highlights how modern food environments influence behavior more than willpower. The book encourages greater awareness, food literacy, and systemic change to support healthier eating habits.

Naturopathic Approach to Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells, impairing the liver’s ability to regulate blood sugar, process fats, and detoxify the body. It often develops without symptoms and is commonly linked to insulin resistance, metabolic imbalance, chronic inflammation, and lifestyle factors. A naturopathic approach addresses the whole person by supporting nutrition, metabolism, gut health, movement, and stress. Care focuses on reducing added sugars and refined carbohydrates, balancing meals with protein and fibre, and emphasizing whole foods. Key nutrients, regular movement, quality sleep, and stress management support liver function. With early, individualized care, fatty liver disease is often reversible.

Nutrition for Seniors

March is Nutrition Month—a timely reminder that our food choices play a vital role in overall well-being, especially as we grow older. A balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps support energy levels, brain function, and heart health. Staying hydrated is equally important, so drinking plenty of water throughout the day is key. Meal planning can make a big difference in maintaining proper nutrition. Smaller, more frequent meals may be easier to manage, and including calcium-rich foods like dairy products and leafy greens can help support strong bones. Good nutrition fuels both body and mind, helping us stay active, healthy, and independent longer.

Brain Injury or Stroke Recovery

Recovering at home after a stroke or brain injury can feel overwhelming, but support is available. Personalized one on one physiotherapy is offered in the comfort of home to improve walking, reduce fall risk, and restore everyday movement. Therapy is practical, goal focused, and tailored to what matters most, from climbing stairs to returning to hobbies or work. Services also include neurological, vestibular, and geriatric rehabilitation. Individualized plans support strength, balance, and confidence. Education for clients and families helps make daily activities safer and easier at home. Compassionate care. Evidence based treatment.

Breathe Better, Sleep Better

Sleep apnea can disrupt rest and affect overall health, but small changes can make a big difference. Maintaining a healthy weight, sleeping on your side, and sticking to a regular sleep schedule may help reduce symptoms. Limiting alcohol and avoiding heavy meals before bedtime can also improve breathing during sleep. Keeping nasal passages clear with humidifiers or saline sprays may ease nighttime congestion. For those prescribed a CPAP or oral appliance, consistent use is key for better sleep quality. Managing sleep apnea supports deeper rest, improves daytime energy, and helps protect heart and brain health.

Foods Affect Your Mood

The foods we eat have a direct impact on our mood, energy levels, and overall mental well-being. Nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish support brain health and help regulate mood by providing essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, promote serotonin production, boosting feelings of happiness and relaxation. In contrast, processed foods, sugary snacks, and excessive caffeine can cause mood swings, fatigue, and anxiety due to blood sugar fluctuations and inflammation. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods can enhance emotional stability, reduce stress, and improve overall mental clarity.
