Bowen Therapy Explained

In a Bowen Therapy session, the patient lies on a bed, wearing loosely fitting clothing, and relaxes, while the therapist applies a specifically located series of gentle movements across the body. The movements are composed of a challenge to a body of muscle, tendon or nerve and a release of the tension vibrates through to the nerve within the area, nerve. The result in a balancing not only on the structural level and functional systems, but also at the level of the individual’s overall well-being. Addressing the body as a whole, in this way, Bowen Therapy treats beyond the presented symptoms and positively affects the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person during the treatment and importantly for many days after. Appointments are usually scheduled a week apart as the treatment’s effect and the body’s process after is lasting many days. In most cases we recommend a series of about 3 treatments to initiate the bowen process. Most of the time the 3 treatments will give a clear idea as to the tempo of future treatments if needed.

Imagine you are 10 years old again and were simply going to get better from this point on, how long would you expect to take? This is the expectation you should have of the treatment…you should just get better!

Key to achieving this expansive benefit is Bowen Therapy’s capacity to stimulate a sense of deep relaxation. This deeply relaxed state, acts upon the body’s autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at the cellular level. Through this a resetting of the autonomic nervous system takes place and while in a state of profound relaxation, the individual’s body is freed to find its own natural balance.

During the actual treatment session, the Bowen therapist will apply the movements in a series of patterns. The therapist leaves the room between the application of each pattern in the series so as to allow the patient the maximum space to fully achieve the deepest relaxant effects and to avoid interfering with the patient’s energetic realignment. Sessions usually last one hour. Often no more than two to five sessions are required for the treatment of most conditions. Treatments will generally be scheduled at 7-day intervals.

As a complementary treatment, Bowen can be used to enhance the benefits of other modalities. We find Homeopathy to be especially beneficial when used in conjunction with Bowen. However, certain alternate modalities affecting deep tissue, when used within a week of a Bowen Therapy treatment, will usually counteract the Bowen’s action (e.g., massage, chiropractics.) If you plan to combine Bowen with any other modality, please be sure to discuss an appropriate treatment schedule with your Bowen therapist.

SianSiân Rackham RT, CBT an accomplished Bowen Therapist.

About Siân, after 28 years in laboratory science she is thrilled to enter this new chapter. She discovered Bowen Therapy after being a client for low back pain. She’d always been to chiropractic for the continued bouts of pain from a chronic alignment issue and was so impressed with the cure that Bowen Therapy gave, in so few treatments. Never needing chiropractic again Siân decided to study with The North American Bowen Teaching College and became a fully Certified Bowen Therapist (CBT).

White Rock Orthopaedic Surgery Centre
Heading: About WROSC

The White Rock Orthopaedic Surgical Center provides the Greater Vancouver area with orthopaedic care in a modern, patient-centered and compassionate environment.

We diagnose, care for and treat patients with joint or bone disorders and injuries in several facilities in the BC Lower Mainland.

Where appropriate WROSC performs a variety of innovative and traditional repair and replacement procedures.

Please contact us for help or more information.

Practice Philosophy

The goal at the White Rock Orthopaedic Surgery Centre (WROSC) is to implement time honoured medical principles, both practical and ethical, to facilitate enhanced delivery of orthopaedic surgical care, in a community based setting.

While emphasizing empathy and compassion in all nonoperative aspects of care, our medical practice is also carefully focused to deliver excellence in all other areas:

  1. diagnosis
  2. assessment of treatment options and planning
  3. surgical excellence, with focus on newly discovered improvements
  4. patient choice
    • of physician/surgeon
    • of treatment option
    • of implants (including joint replacements)
    • of location of surgery
    • of timing of surgery

We recognize the value, but also the limitations, of publicly administered health care. It is a complex issue and the publicly administered health care system faces significant challenges. We have managed to maintain an exemplary level of emergency care at Peace Arch Hospital. However, the ongoing pressure to deliver a wide range of emergency services in the hospital precludes expanding elective, non-emergency, surgical orthopaedic care, and it contributes to significant waiting lists.

In response to this situation in the public health system, we are exploring alternative ways to deliver orthopaedic care. Currently, a wide range of our outpatient orthopaedic procedures are being performed in a private surgical facility. This returns control of the surgical procedure to the patient.

For more information please read about our procedures or contact us.

Tiggy’s at crescent, School of Art

We are a teaching studio dedicated to helping people delve into their creative side through directed art instruction.

www.tiggys.ca

Tiggy’s at crescent school of art (formerly Tiggywinkle’s in Ocean Park) was founded by Jackie Neufeld in South Surrey twenty years ago with the purpose of providing art classes that everyone can understand. Our small class sizes – eight students maximum – ensures every student receives the one-on-one attention they need in order to have a positive experience.

We primarily offer painting classes (using professional-grade non-toxic acrylic paints on canvas), but occasionally offer drawing and coloured pencil classes as well. Our unique approach to teaching art in a fun and supportive environment is why we have stayed in business for twenty years, and have students from South Surrey/White Rock, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and even as far away as the Gulf Islands, Atlanta, and England!

Even though we teach art, we’re not all “artsy fartsy.”

Students Sitting 4

When Jackie first started teaching painting classes she realized the vast majority of her students had wanted to explore their creative side for a long time, but thought they weren’t “artistic” enough. With this in mind she began developing a teaching method that she has employed since starting Tiggy’s. She wanted to ensure all her students realized that anyone can have fun and be creative and still create a work of art they’d be proud to show off.

In all her classes she teaches the fundamentals of art, brushwork, and colour theory, and demonstrates these techniques right on the canvas. Students learn the important building blocks by implementing them in a step-by-step way that makes sense. By the end of the class, students have a stronger understanding of what makes art beautiful because they have practiced these techniques themselves while creating their very own professional-looking painting.

In every class you take at Tiggy’s, you receive a set of comprehensive class notes to take home, a photograph of the finished painting, instruction tailored to your individual needs, general supplies to use in the class, and complimentary coffee and tea.

If you are new to Tiggy’s check out our New Students page, with information on our Beginner’s Programme.

In every painting class at Tiggy’s, we teach you how to express your creativity.

Jackie Demonstrating

We teach you how to paint, step-by-step. Every class you take at Tiggy’s includes a variety of techniques in order to achieve the finished product. Each class will cover:

  • Colour theory behind the painting: the reason for certain colour choices and where and when to use them.
  • How to mix colours to the correct value, intensity and temperature.
  • Brush and palette-knife techniques to achieve the look you want.
  • Design choices: how to place objects in a painting to encourage movement and flow.
  • Preparation and finishing techniques and methods.

At Tiggy’s school of art, the process is as important as the end product. We strive to teach the techniques and skills necessary to enable you to become an independent artist, and to enjoy painting because you’re good at it!
