Consider Coaching

Our personalities are like boats we sail without much freeboard. We trade wisdom and depth for speed and security, but rough times can swamp us. While we aim for strength, immunity, vitality, meaning, and purpose, the unexpected stresses create uncertainty, doubt, and weakness. Consider counseling, coaching, mentoring, time-management, psychology, and hypnosis as one-time, short-term corrections. Having someone skilled at listening without judgment can go a long way toward righting and redirecting yourself. Read an online chronicle about counseling and COVID-19 here: bit.ly/COVID19chronicle

Dealing with Grief & Trauma

Trauma and grief often go hand-in-hand, and learning how to mourn can be a crucial part of healing from grief and trauma. Grief is the reactions that we must mourn through a shift to an active, shared response instead of a passive, isolated one. Six ways to help active mourning include: 1) Acknowledging the loss is real. 2) Interacting with the pain instead of avoiding it. 3) Honouring what you loved about who/what you are mourning. 4) Discovering the new you in the context of loss. 5) Finding meaning and purpose beyond what happened. 6) Getting ongoing support and talking with loved ones and/or a professional.

Science shows that music is a great brain booster. 4) Eat right. A healthy diet is crucial for cognitive health. 5) Learn something new. Keep your mind engaged!

Hearing Loss and Brain Health

Hearing involves not only your ears but also the brain, so it’s no wonder that hearing loss can go hand in hand with thinking and memory problems. Studies are increasingly linking hearing loss to issues such as faster brain shrinkage, earlier onset of significant cognitive impairment, and up to a quintupled risk of dementia. Addressing conditions such as hearing loss, however, could help prevent a third of dementia cases worldwide, per a UK research collaborative. With hearing health and overall wellness so connected, it’s important to seek regular hearing checks and address listening difficulties early.

Beat the Heat this Summer

Getting outside for activity should be a priority especially during the warmer months. However, certain precautions should be taken to avoid over-exposure to the heat and sun. Choosing to get outside earlier in the day when it’s a bit cooler, covering up with light/breathable clothing, a hat and sunscreen, and ensuring that you are always hydrated by drinking water throughout the day (and not just when you feel thirsty), are all good strategies to get full enjoyment out of your outdoor activities. Enjoy the beautiful sunshine!

Heal with Guasha

Guasha is an ancient healing technique used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the treatment, special oil is put on a particular area of the skin, and the therapist starts “scraping” the area repeatedly with a “scraper” (a specially designed instrument of jade or horn). Patients hardly feel pain, neither during nor after the treatment. This process can improve local microcirculation instead of causing tissue damage. In most cases the patient feels an immediate improvement in their condition particularly in their pain or sense of constraint.
