Physiotherapists offer training for the deep muscles of your core. These muscles include: 1) Transversus abdominis – the deepest abdominal that wraps around the abdomen between the lower ribs and top of the pelvis. It stabilizes the low back and pelvis and protects the inner organs. 2) Multifidus – a deep muscle located along the back of the spine very close to the midline that works with other muscles to stabilize the low back and pelvis. 3) The pelvic floor – a hammock of muscles that connect the pubic bone at the front to the tailbone and “sitz” bones at the back. There are no recipes for training the deep muscles – speak to your physiotherapist about the right training for your core.
Rooted in Song
Song has grown with us through life’s many chapters. As babies our mothers sang to soothe and comfort, to get our attention and lull us to sleep as mother figures have done for generations. As toddlers we mimicked what we heard and began bonding with our families through singing songs about the world around us, silly songs, and songs to soothe us after bumps and bruises. These musical habits followed us as we aged to accompany skipping, discovering and courage. Many stepping stones are crossed in life which take us to new places, but our need for song is constant.

What’s the Human Body-Field?
While traditional healthcare has primarily focused on physiology, we are now seeing that energy and information control biology. In fact, frontier science proves that there is a regulating field of energy and information that operates in the physical body at the subcellular level. At NES Health, they call this the Human Body-Field (HBF), and they have researched its functions and structures for more than 30 years. In that time, they have discovered that the root causes of physical problems are distortions and blockages in the body-field, which serves as a master control system for all physiological function.
Make Self-Care a Priority
Stress is a natural part of everyday life. But are you aware that stress is among the number one cause for all kinds of health concerns including sleep deprivation, changes in appetite, illness, anxiety, & depression? One of the greatest ways to combat these stress symptoms is to implement a self-care plan that is done regularly in your life. Self-care strategies are doing activities that you enjoy on a regular basis. Like when a flight attendant does the safety brief and asks you to put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others, it is important to ensure your own health and wellness is a priority.
Spinal Manipulative Therapy
Spinal manipulation is a treatment technique that involves a high velocity, low amplitude thrust, which is performed by the practitioner on a joint segment of the patient’s spine. The treatment is often accompanied by an audible ‘pop’, which is a change in pressure within the synovial joint. Manipulations can be very helpful in providing pain relief to a specific injury, but the effects are short-lived. The long-term rehab plan for your pain/injury should focus on active-based programming such as exercise. The combination of manual therapy followed by exercise provides more permanent results and better patient outcomes. Ask your practitioner if this is right for you!
Building a Child’s Mental Health
How will you contribute to your child’s mental health this summer?
All it takes is your time, and presence. Designate jobs for money earned so they have a sense of purpose.
Ditch the basement time with electronics. Enjoy and explore the outdoors together, whether it be a walk, bike ride, picnic, park or pool time. Build up your relationship with your presence, without opening your wallet. Children remember and cherish the time you have spent with them. It also fosters a caring environment where they may feel safe and a sense of belonging.
Enjoy your family, enjoy your summer.
Healthy Bones
Regular weight bearing exercise or strength training is essential to maintaining healthy bones. Resistance training improves muscle mass and strength and can increase spine and hip bone density. Physiotherapists assess posture, understand risk factors and can advise which exercises are best for those with osteoporosis. If you are a woman, you have a 50% lifetime risk of a fracture from osteoporosis. Maintaining adequate bone density lowers the risk of fracture. How does exercise affect bone health? Bone is a living tissue. Bone cells, have the ability to adapt to the amount of stress placed on them thus increasing density.

Put Down That Chemical Sunscreen
A recent study conducted by the FDA and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that commonly used chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream at potentially toxic levels after just one day of use. Instead of physically deflecting UV light away from the skin like a mineral sunscreen would do, chemical sunscreens absorb the UV radiation into the skin and dissipate the energy via a chemical reaction under the skin. Additionally, there is concern that chemical sunscreens can permeate the skin and cause hormone disruption. Common chemical sunscreen ingredients to avoid include oxybenzone (one of the worst offenders), avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
Let’s Talk About Travel Health
Travelling around the globe is more commonplace today than ever. But when people travel, they often unwittingly bring along extra baggage that they didn’t even know they packed. Viruses and bacteria are always on the move, as travellers carry them either by travelling while ill or by being a carrier – having the infection but not experiencing symptoms yet. The good news is that if you do come in contact with a virus or bacteria, there is an excellent chance that an antibiotic or other medication will preserve your good health. Getting vaccinated against diseases that are common to your travel destination will give you extra peace of mind before you hop on that plane.
