Men’s Health Month encourages men to focus on physical, mental, and social well-being. Throughout June, men are urged to set health goals and create a plan to achieve them. Men aged 15–65 are less likely than women to seek preventive care or have a primary care provider. Taking the first step—scheduling a visit with your primary care doctor—can help identify needed screenings and build a foundation for long-term health. Prioritize mental health, manage stress, stay socially connected, and listen to your body. Men’s Health Month is a great time to take charge and commit to a healthier future.
Maintaining Strength & Mobility After 30
After age 30, the body naturally begins to lose muscle mass and strength. This process, known as muscle degeneration, can affect balance, energy levels, metabolism, and overall physical health. A sedentary lifestyle can speed up muscle loss, making everyday activities more difficult over time. Strength training plays an important role in slowing this decline by building and maintaining muscle tissue. Regular resistance exercises, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands, improve strength, flexibility, and bone health. At Metabolik Fitness, our group classes provide structure and guidance from qualified trainers, helping participants learn proper technique and reduce the risk of injury.
BINGO: Give or Get What’s Needed
Once you have named and normalized your feelings, the next step is to respond with care. Ask yourself, What do I need right now? Sometimes the answer is to give yourself something: a break, comfort, movement, or connection. Other times, it is to reach out and get support from someone else. In the BINGO model, G stands for Give or Get What’s Needed, a reminder that self-regulation is not about doing it alone, but about meeting your needs with kindness and intention.
Creative Solutions for Home Equity
A Reverse Mortgage can be a great tool for older adult homeowners in many different situations. Not only can it help with the rising costs of staying in your family home, but it can also help protect and grow retirement savings. Instead of supplementing income with additional RRIF withdrawals or TFSA funds to cover costs, reverse mortgage funds can be withdrawn tax-free, allowing your investments to continue to grow tax-free. I specialize in finding creative ways to leverage home equity to help fund your later years. Reach out for a private family meeting. I’m here to listen and help.
Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Eye exams play a major role in maintaining eye health. Not only do they indicate whether you need glasses or a prescription change, but they also help detect eye conditions that can affect your vision. Optometrists use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to see the health of your eyes. OCT takes pictures to create a 3D scan of the back of your eye to help detect conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma and the earliest stages of age-related macular degeneration. At Specsavers, we include OCT scans with every standard eye exam.
Support for Healthy Aging
Red light therapy is gaining attention as a safe, non-invasive way to support healthy aging. Using gentle wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, the therapy stimulates cellular energy production in the body’s mitochondria. Research indicates it reduces joint pain and inflammation, improves circulation, supports muscle recovery, and promotes healthier skin. Many people also report better sleep and increased energy. Sessions are relaxing, painless, and an opportunity to be at peace. As interest in drug-free wellness solutions grows, red light therapy is becoming a popular option for seniors looking to stay active, comfortable, and vibrant while supporting their overall health and vitality.
OSA & Men’s Health
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious men’s health issue that often goes undiagnosed. It affects breathing during sleep, causing repeated interruptions that lead to poor rest and increased health risks. Men are particularly vulnerable due to anatomical and hormonal factors. Untreated OSA is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression. Loud snoring, gasping, and daytime fatigue are common symptoms. Early diagnosis through sleep studies and effective treatment—like CPAP therapy—can dramatically improve quality of life. Raising awareness and encouraging routine screening is essential to protect men’s long-term health and well-being. Sleep matters more than you think.
Stay Engaged in Retirement
After retirement, some people struggle to replace the camaraderie they shared with their office colleagues so find themselves at loose ends. Membership in the BCGREA can help. During the year, it offers get-togethers along with guest speakers on topics that may include; Fraud Prevention, Sorting out Post-Retirement Life, CRA Tips and wellness presentations from their affinity partners. Other activities include walks to explore local trails and parks and occasional field trips to places of interest or special events. The BCGREA has seven branches on the Island, including the Western Communities Branch, a community of over 300 members enjoying retirement. To learn more, please contact Al at [email protected].
