PTSD in Children & Teens

Children can develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events like abuse, violence, car accident or major illness. Common symptoms include nightmares, separation anxiety, intense fear, and difficulty with transitions. They may also struggle with irritability, trouble focusing, or complain of physical symptoms like stomachaches and headaches or regress to earlier behaviors, such as bedwetting. Early intervention, including trauma-focused therapy, can help children process their experiences and begin to heal. A nurturing, understanding environment plays a vital role in helping them feel safe, regain confidence, and rebuild emotional well-being.

Heart Health Tips for Heart Month

February is Heart Month—a perfect reminder to focus on heart health. Small, consistent changes can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy heart. Start by adding more heart-friendly foods to your diet, like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Reduce salt and sugar intake to keep blood pressure and blood sugar levels in check. Regular physical activity, like a brisk walk or gentle stretching, helps strengthen your heart and improves circulation. Managing stress is equally important; take time for yourself through mindfulness, hobbies, or connecting with loved ones. Finally, remember to stay on top of routine check-ups and listen to your body. A healthy heart is a happy heart!

Eating a Heart-Healthy Diet

When combined with other healthy habits, eating a heart-healthy diet can help you control blood pressure and blood sugar levels, maintain a healthy weight, and lower cholesterol. Focus on eating fewer trans fats (fried foods), saturated fats (processed foods), high-fat meats, processed meats and cheeses, and anything high in sugar or sodium. Eat more colourful veggies and fruits; high-quality proteins (such as poultry and fatty fish); healthy fats (such as avocados, olive oil, flax seeds, raw nuts, and fish oils); high-fibre pastas, breads, or cereals made from legumes or whole grains; eggs; and dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa).
