Sun Safety – Did You Know?

Summer may be winding to a close, but it’s still really important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet A & B rays! You might think the chance of getting a sunburn on cloudy days is less, but the sun’s damaging UV light can pass through clouds.

Not only are we at risk of sunburns, which are uncomfortable, other problems can occur along with sunburn, such as heatstroke or other heat related illnesses from too much sun exposure, allergic reactions to the sun, sunscreens products or certain medications, vision problems such as eye dryness and burning, decreased vision or even partial vision loss. Not to mention the possibility of long-term issues such as skin changes or skin cancer.

Did you know that you are more likely to get a sunburn between 11 a.m. in the morning and 3 p.m.? That is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Did you know that it’s easier to get sunburned at higher altitudes? That’s because there’s less of the earth’s atmosphere to block the sunlight. UV exposure increases in elevation.

Did you know that the closer you are to the equator, the more direct sunlight passes through the atmosphere?

People with lighter skin are generally prone to sunburns, but darker skinned people can also burn so it is important to always protect your skin and eyes from the sun, don’t stay in the sun too long and use sunscreen and wear clothing that covers your skin whenever possible!

Community Announcement

DID YOU KNOW: September is Recovery Month in Canada. Since 2012, a network of people in recovery, families, service providers, and entire communities have come together to celebrate RECOVERY

WHY IS RECOVERY DAY IMPORTANT
Thousands of individuals are affected by substances use disorder and may never receive the support they need, leaving hundreds of Canadians to die each month. While there is no cure for addiction, there is a solution. Together we build awareness, challenge societal Stigma, and above all else show our community that recovery is real, attainable and sustainable.

WHAT IS STIGMA
The stigma around substance use is one of the biggest barriers for people seeing and receiving treatment for addiction. Stigma is often displayed in the forms of discriminatory attitudes and beliefs, and behaviours. Stigma is a significant barrier to getting help for those with a substance use disorder, or who have used substances in the past. As a society, the words we use to describe people and their health conditions influence and reflect our attitudes and approaches to helping them. Language evolves and continuously adapts to respond to changes in society’s values and understanding of oppression in our culture.

International studies by the World Health Organization show that people with alcohol and drug use disorders are among some of most stigmatized individuals of all health conditions.

NATIONAL STATISTICS SHOW

3.3 Million people die each year due to the harmful use of Alcohol.
35,000 people die from alcohol and drug use disorders.
Only 14% of people who meet the criteria for a drug use disorder receive
Any treatment for it.

PCOS Awareness Month

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects around 10 million globally. Its exact cause remains uncertain, though genetics and environment contribute. It’s a key cause of female infertility, with diverse physical and emotional symptoms. Despite the name, not all have ovarian cysts. Insulin inefficiency and excess lead to glucose problems and more androgens. Progesterone imbalance causes irregular periods. PCOS emerges after puberty or in early adulthood and is often undiagnosed due to varied symptoms. Diagnosis requires two of: irregular periods, enlarged ovaries, and excess androgens. Early management, including weight loss, reduces diabetes and heart disease risk.

Nutrition for School-Aged Children

As summer ends, school resumes adding stress & responsibilities that tax the body’s nutrient reserves. Make the most out of the school year by setting your family up for success with vital nutrients. Omega fatty acids, like from fish oil, can help improve brain function, focus, learning, memory, and behavior. Vitamin C can help fight inflammation & pathogens, keeping the immune system at top notch. Probiotics can help strengthen the immune system, improve brain function, behavior, and digestion. The great thing about using nutrition to get your family to be their best self, is it is all so versatile and can help with so much!

Yardwork Services

Services include lawn cutting, fall cleanup of leaves, gardening, flower beds and weeding. As with all of our services we can provide as much or as little based on what your needs are. We can also do small hedge trimming and pruning. As always if cost is a barrier we will work with you to overcome that barrier. During spring and fall we can also do outside window cleaning and eaves cleaning as well.

Grocery Delivery Program

Regardless of age, we all need to eat. But those groceries can be heavy, and the store can be busy and loud. Or you might not have time for it amidst all your other appointments and obligations. So let us shop on your behalf by joining our grocery program. Our members can phone or e-mail us on Monday and provide us with a detailed shopping list and a store to go to. We will buy what you need and deliver it to you. We can even buy non-food items like yarn or cutlery. And you’re not obligated to order every week. Some people even only order once to get that item from a store that’s too far from home. But slots are limited (another reason why our volunteers are so important) so contact us for more information.

Volunteers Needed!

Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this by helping seniors to remain in their own homes safely for as long as possible. The fall season offers our very popular Yard Work and Gardening programs. We encourage anyone with a heart of gold who likes working outdoors to volunteer so that seniors in our community can keep their yards and gardens looking beautiful now that winter has finally receded. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping seniors in our community, please contact our office today. All help is greatly appreciated.

September is Arthritis Awareness Month

According to Stats Canada over 37% of Canadians over the age of 20 have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, mainly affecting hips and knees. This is the wear and tear condition due to breakdown of cartilage between the joints leading to pain and stiffness. Along with typical Naturopathic treatments, another beneficial treatment modality is Cold Laser, which uses light wavelengths to stimulate new energy production leading to restoration of normal function by increasing blood flow, nervous stimulation, and new cell growth. These treatments are non-invasive, painless and can be done a few times a week to stimulate that healing process.

Help Support Seniors in Our Community today!

All support is extremely valuable, be it donations, volunteer time or simply word-of-mouth. It is the people of Saskatoon that enable us to continue helping the city’s venerable population. Your generous donations help us progress our services while playing a vital role in keeping seniors independent. Every dollar of support stays right here in Saskatoon. We have many lower-income seniors that need our services, and the generosity of your support allows us to be able to assist them. Donations of $20 or over will get a tax receipt. We graciously accept cheques, cash, or e-transfer.
