Depression in Older Adults

Unfortunately, many older adults fail to recognize the symptoms of depression, or don’t take the steps to get the help they need. There are many reasons why elderly depression is often overlooked. You may assume that is just part of aging, or you may be isolated with few people around to notice your distress. You also may be reluctant to ask for help. Of course, when you’re depressed, putting steps into action can be hard, but taking a short walk, for example, can boost your mood for the next two hours. By taking small steps day by day, you’ll find yourself feeling more energetic and hopeful again. Reach out for help if you are struggling.

Feel the Gain with Less Pain

“Are there any exercises that can help me?” “Are there any exercises, or things I shouldn’t do?” These are two of the most common questions we hear in our physiotherapy office and are difficult to answer simply. The short answer is yes and no to both. When exercising hurts, and you find yourself afraid to try, but know you should, figuring out ‘the why’ is essential. More pain doesn’t lead to gain. There are many ways to exercise and the worst exercise is none at all. If moving better, or more, or with less pain is on your New Year’s resolution list this year, come for a consultation and learn ‘your why’ and what to do. Stick to a Schedule

When experiencing the January blues, it can be tempting to alter your schedule to avoid activities and
socialization and to hibernate instead. For example, if you prepared dinner at a certain time every day, try to stick to that same schedule. If you were used to attending activities or church at a certain time every week, stick to that as often as possible. We have calendars for each month in the resource centre at The Golden Circle that outlines all of our activities and events – we are happy to help to keep you on a schedule.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet is essential for older adults and is a natural way to boost your mood and energy.
You can come down to the Golden Circle three days/week when we are serving meals, or you can access our Homestyle Frozen Meal program!

Ukelele Jam, Pinochle, Scrabble, Euchre, Music Jam, The Golden Circle Singers, Carpet Bowling, Bocce and more! Did you know that we have a Men’s Club as well? Mengagement is committed to engaging men in life and living. They endeavour to develop activities that encourage socialization, connection, learning serving and fun to enhance a sense of safety, identity, belonging, purpose, worthiness, and healthy aging for men in our community! Avoiding the January Blues

January can be a difficult month for many, especially for older adults. The build up and excitement of
Christmas is over, and research has shown that there are a great many people who feel down in the
dumps in January. Did you know that with the most depressing day of the year is third Monday of January? Blue Monday they call it due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights, and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills. There are a lot of ways to combat the January Blues and The Golden Circle can help!
