Join a Library Book Club!

Book clubs are a great way to connect with other book lovers and find fantastic new reads! Red Deer Public Library has book clubs that are currently meeting online, so you can join us from the comfort of your home. Our three book clubs are:
• Happy Ever After: A book club for romance fans.
• Fireside Readers: A book club that reads a variety of member-selected titles.
• Any Book Book Club: A casual book club where you can read and talk about ANY book!
We also have Book Club Kits that you can borrow if you are already part of a book club, with ten copies of a given title and discussion questions for your group.

Seasons Greetings!

Seasons Greeting to everyone who receives the Wellness News publication. It’s a good time of year to count our blessings and appreciate all of those who make a contribution to everything we enjoy about living in our community. Those on the front lines of our health care facilities deserve particularly heart-felt thanks after what has been a particularly challenging time for them. We hope that everyone can take the time to safely connect with family and friends over the holidays.

Holiday Nutrition Tips

While everyone struggles to maintain a healthy diet during this time of year, it is especially important for seniors to keep nutrition in the back of their mind. One of the best ways to reduce cravings is to plan ahead. Try to account for the options beforehand and make decisions about which holiday treats you would really enjoy the most. Decide that those will be your picks, and then plan healthy meals around them. Another tip is to fill up on the good stuff first. If you fill your belly with nutritious foods like fruits, veggies and lean protein, you’re less likely to overindulge in greater amounts of fat, sugar and salt.

Wellness for Winter

Wellness can be hard to maintain during the winter months when presents and holiday meals can take priority. Basic foundations to health, like balancing nutrition and toxins, eating wholefoods, and avoiding processed, artificial, or sugar can significantly improve health & quality of life, but not everybody can keep up. Regardless of diet and lifestyle choices, supplements like vit d, vit c, and omegas can provide help immune, stress, hormonal, inflammation/pain, and brain function. Quality can make a difference, so find a locally owned store you can trust to have your best interest at heart.

Workplace Wellness This Holiday Season

The holidays bring plenty of joy, but it can also be a stressful season for many. Focus on workplace wellness to help employees maintain healthy habits and mental health. Choose healthy options for holiday events and give gifts of wellness to employees this year i.e., onsite massages or stress management lunch and learns. Encourage employees to stay active by hosting onsite yoga classes. Support employee’s financial wellness with minimal budgets on events and partnering with local business for discounts and promotions. Be mindful of your decisions and the impacts it may have on your employees. Healthy & Happy New Year!

Cherish the Memories When Downsizing

Downsizing is often a stressful process — both emotionally and physically. When the time comes, give yourself plenty of time for the process to make it seem less overwhelming. As you go through and sort things, recognize and acknowledge the sentimental value of a once-prized stuffed bear and decades-worth of Mother’s Day cards. Grandma’s bone china will remind you of all the happy family times. It is ok to get lost in nostalgia. Remind yourself that the memories will always be there, but the future holds an infinite number of new memories and possibilities. Trust the process and enjoy every moment.

Communication Rule

Many misunderstandings and conflicts arise because of poor communication. Here is something to remember. Communication is made up of 7% spoken words; 38% of voice and tone; and 55% body language. This is SO important to keep in mind when you are talking to anyone – in your workplace or at home. How you present yourself and how calm and open your demeanor are far more important than the actual words. If you keep this as a reminder to you and those around you (family, coworkers) it will help you all get along better!

Travelling? Consider a Pet Sitter

Now that the world is opening up to travel, it’s time to get planning for a holiday! Arranging for pet care while you’re away can feel like an overwhelming decision. It’s important to look for caregivers who will not only provide for basic needs like food and water, but also companionship, reassurance, and playtime while you’re away. If you can find someone to come to your home, your pet gets to stay in his familiar surroundings, which is less stressful than taking him to a new location. You and your pet should feel comfortable about the care arrangements, so you can enjoy your vacation without worry!
