Q: How much magnification does one get with +2.00 reading glasses? I can’t find any that actually make things look twice as big.
A: The strength of reading glasses actually corresponds to how far they allow the user to focus on close objects. In general, low powered reading glasses allow the user to focus out a bit further (like when using a computer). Higher powered lenses will entail much closer focusing (e.g. for threading a needle). The necessary strengths vary from person to person.
Are You Always in ‘Fight or Flight’ Mode?
Massage therapy is undeniably effective at getting people tapped in to their parasympathetic nervous system, which is more commonly called ‘rest and digest’. Unfortunately, many spend most of their days in ‘fight or flight’! When the parasympathetic nervous system is in charge, blood pressure and heart rate lower, breathing is fuller, oxygen and blood make it deeper into the body, tissues repair themselves, organs do their jobs better, and overall, mental health is much more relaxed and content. It’s not hard to understand why being in ‘rest and digest’ is more conducive to recovery, management and being better prepared to handle what life throws at us!
Promoting Safety
Safety is one of the most important pieces in our overall health and well-being. When we think of being safe, we often think of avoiding physical dangers. However, our complex minds also filter information to promote our emotional and psychological safety. When our brain perceives a threat, it will signal feelings in our bodies to defend against it. Sometimes if we are not paying attention, we miss these signals, leaving us feeling unwell. To help overcome this, the next time you notice feeling scared, try observing the problem, while building awareness for how your body is responding.
Aromatherapy for Anxiety
Chronic anxiety is unpredictable and overpowering. Did you know that caffeine has been associated with anxiety? Caffeine increases alertness by blocking a brain chemical (adenosine) that makes you feel tired, and overuse can cause anxiety. The essential oils suggested to help with anxiety are Basil, Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Melissa, Marjoram, and Patchouli. Inhaling a couple of deep breaths of your chosen essential oil will help calm down that feeling of being overwhelmed. Better still is having a diffuser in your home, car or workplace. This will diffuse the essential oils into the air. Now all you have to do is breathe and relax.
Open House – Canadian School of Natural Nutrition
The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition has a curriculum that is a balance of both hard science such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Chemistry, and Social Sciences, (study of people, individually and in groups, their customs and relationships) in courses such as Symptomatology, Pediatrics, Sports and Ecology. Symptomatology, with its focus on the individual’s identification of health-concerns and symptoms, is a perfect blend of both hard and social sciences. This allows the holistic nutritionist to assess the whole person and make recommendations to improve his or her health. Find out more at the Open House on November 16th.
Eating Right for Fall
In Chinese Medicine, eating and living with the seasons is an important part of staying healthy. Autumn is a time to introduce heartier, denser food. Excellent choices include roasted root veggies, tubers and gourds. Think pumpkin, winter squash, yams and carrots — especially slow-cooked, roasted or in soups. In Chinese Medicine, it is widely believed that we are what we eat. And most dietary guidelines follow on from nature. If we ingest seasonal foods that are similar in nature to their external environment, we remain in harmony with the environmental, adapt better to changes in season, and stay healthy.
Simple Ways to Prevent Cancer

Strength training and cardio exercise help maintain a healthy body weight as well strengthen our immune system. We should aim for at least 30 minutes of activity 3 times a week. Make the right choices today to help prevent cancer tomorrow!
Socks with Compression for Healthy Circulation
Today’s travel often involves long flights in cramped seats that can be very hard on your circulation. Wearing socks with mild compression will comfortably help increase circulation and reduce the risk of swelling. The compression steadily squeezes your legs, helping your veins and leg muscles move blood more efficiently. They offer a simple, safe and economical way to keep blood from stagnating. Others things that will help you during long flights include getting up and stretching every hour while flying, staying hydrated and flexing your ankles every 30 minutes.

Ways to Improve Memory
Internal strategies are things we ‘do inside our brain’ to remember things. This includes paying attention by focusing on what is being said and reducing any background distractions. Another method is organizing information in small chunks of five or six ‘bits’ of information together. Making visual pictures is an effective strategy to remember things. ‘A picture is worth 1,000 words.’ We remember pictures and images better than words. Thinking of a picture activates the right hemisphere of the brain; just thinking of a word uses mainly your left brain.
Attending Theatre is “Healthy Cardio Exercise”
Scientists from the UK claim that going to the theatre can stimulate a person’s cardiovascular system nearly as much as half an hour of exercise. Researchers found that despite study participants remaining sedentary for the duration of a production, they spend 28 minutes “engaged in healthy cardio exercise.” According to the study, feel-good shows and musicals are not the only kinds of theatre that have the potential to get a viewer’s heart going. We aren’t saying you should give up your gym membership, but it is fabulous knowing another benefit to theatre, so check out our 2020 Season lineup!
