Three Tips to Boost Focus
1. Practice Mindful Journaling: set aside time every day to write down how you are feeling right now, sensations you feel, and why you are feeling the way you are. Do this without judgement and be kind to yourself. 2. Practice Gratitude: every day tell a family member or colleague three things you are grateful for – your overall positivity will skyrocket after one month. 3. Try Uni-tasking. That is, focus only on one thing at a time. Want more tips? Check out our full Guide to Mindfulness at Work at wellnessworkscanada.ca.
Look for Local
Cooks Creek Kimchi. Established in 2017, Cooks Creek Kimchi is made in Cooks Creek, Manitoba by a father and son team. Having originated in Korea over 2,000 years ago, kimchi is full of both probiotics and prebiotics. It’s traditionally consumed as an ingredient or side dish with every meal. Cooks Creek Kimchi includes only 100% natural ingredients, without any gluten, shellfish, or added colour or preservatives, is low in sugar and salt, and is fully fermented. Choose from three varieties: Traditional, Vegan, and Mild/White. Look for Manitoba-made Cooks Creek Kimchi the next time you do your grocery shopping at Sobeys.
Thank You for Your Donation
Thank you to our sponsors, donors and attendees from the 2022 Gala Dinner & Dance. The Brandon Regional Health Foundation was able to purchase various sizes of C-Mac Blades for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as well as three Blood Pressure Monitors (NIBPs) for the second floor of the Assiniboine Centre. C-Mac Blades are part of life-saving equipment used in the ICU for patients in need of intubation. The new NIBPs for the Assiniboine Centre will be invaluable during periods of increased respiratory illnesses, as they allow medical staff to monitor and track changes to patients’ blood pressure. Thank you again for your incredible generosity!
Getting a Better Night’s Sleep
In a recent survey, 30 percent of older adults reported being dissatisfied with their sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, here are a few tips to get you back on track: 1) Maintain a sleep schedule and go to bed at the same time each night. 2) Don’t use bedtime as worry time – an anxious mind will have trouble falling asleep so try some deep breathing exercises or reading a few pages of a book to help you relax. 3) Consider the benefits of daily exercise. A study from Northwestern University showed that adults aged 55+ who exercised 4 times a week for 30 minutes a day dramatically improved their sleep quality!
Eating a Balanced Diet
To maintain our health, we need to consume foods that provide us with essential nutrients that our bodies can’t produce themselves. This means we need to eat a balanced diet that includes both macronutrients and micronutrients. People’s nutrient needs can vary based on their age, physical activity level, and sex. Macronutrients include fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and some minerals, and our bodies need these in large quantities daily for growth, energy, and maintenance. Micronutrients include vitamins and trace minerals, and our bodies need them to metabolize macronutrients. Micronutrients are usually required in smaller amounts – from milligrams to micrograms.
