The Dangers of Stress

Stress, also known as worrying and anxiety, causes or contributes to 85% of all your illnesses. Stress leads to heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, headaches, cancer, depression – basically anything. Today, more than any other time in history, we live in a stressful environment. Your brain cannot tell the difference between whether you are being attacked by a bear or just worrying over something that is not a physical danger. Once stressed, you enter into survival mode and your body produces cortisol for the fight or flight, and your metabolism and body functions change to preserve energy. This makes it very difficult to lose weight. Stress also makes it difficult to think clearly, as you become focused on the problem and not on the solution, which causes a revolving thought pattern. How healthy would we be if we could just learn to control stress or eliminate it altogether?

How Athletes Benefit from Floating

Floating isn’t amazing because athletes and celebrities do it; athletes and celebrities float because it’s amazing. Simple, natural and effective: Floating is a performance-enhancing experience for everyone. Tom Brady, Steph Curry, Wayne Rooney, Carl Lewis, and Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman are just a few athletes who have been vocal about their love of floating. Physically, floating reduces muscle tension, pain, inflammation and blood pressure. But it has a host of psychological benefits as well that help athletes perform at their best. Sports psychologist for the Seattle Seahawks, Mike Gervais, regularly uses meditation and mindfulness to help players make the most of their performance. Floating is being implemented into professional training regimens all over the world because of its ability to improve both physical and mental performance. By reducing stress and recovery time, as well as providing an extremely relaxing environment, flotation therapy provides undeniable advantages to both high-level athletes and recreational exercisers.

Types of Muscle Tendon Injuries

We can sustain different types of injuries to a muscle tendon, and each one could change how you treat it. It is important to differentiate what is actually happening with each type. A strain signifies that someone has pulled their tendon too far, and some of its fibres have torn. A strain can be a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree tear. Generally, a 1st degree strain implies less than half the tendon is torn, a 2nd degree is over half torn, and a 3rd degree denotes full rupture. Tendinitis refers to inflammation occurring at the affected site, usually stemming from repetitive stress or loading of the tendon, over a long period of time. Subsequently, someone can suffer from a tendinosis. This is where the tendon has been put under stress for a much longer period of time with tendinitis, but now the tendon has less inflammation and has chronic degeneration.

Disarming Narcissistic Behaviour

We can’t control someone else’s behaviour. We don’t have the right or the power. We have to work at changing our own programming, because we often get upset when someone has a perception of us that we are uncomfortable with. We then tend to challenge that person’s perception of us. A narcissistic person loves this. It is their sign that they have you where they want you. Something amazing happens when you accept that others are allowed to have their own faulty perception of you. Here are some key phrases to experiment with: “I am sorry you feel that way.” “I can accept your faulty perception of me.” “I have no right to control how you see me.” “I guess I have to accept how you feel.” “Your anger is not my responsibility.” Take back your power!

Does Your Dog Have Hot Spots?

They’re commonly known as hot spots, but the medical term for those bare, inflamed, red areas you often see on dogs is acute moist dermatitis — a bacterial skin infection. Anything that irritates your dog’s skin enough to make him scratch or chew can lead to pain and infection. A hot spot’s location can help your vet diagnose its cause. Fleas, for example, may be the source of a hip hot spot, while a hot spot at the ear might point to ear problems. Treating hot spots may involve shaving and cleaning the irritated area, antibiotics, steroids, or topical medications, depending on how bad the hot spots are, and how much pain your pooch is in. Healthy skin is the key to preventing hot spots! If your pooch has a thick, heavy coat, groom him regularly to prevent his coat from matting. Matted fur traps moisture and parasites, creating the ideal environment for hot spots.

6 Ways to Alkalize Your Body

Did you know that your immunity is based on how alkaline your diet is? Having an overly acidic diet eventually leads to a weakened state, and our bodies become susceptible to disease. Here are six ways to alkalize – and healthify – your body!

1. Drink plenty of water. Drink half your body weight in ounces every day to keep your body systems regulated. For an extra boost in alkalinity – add lemon!

2. Trade coffee for tea. Green tea is highly alkaline. Try jasmine, sencha or matcha.

3. Kick that sugar habit. Use stevia, coconut sugar or small amounts of honey in place of sugar.

4. Eat more greens. Vegetables are highly alkaline and oxygen rich. Consume fresh green vegetables often as possible.

5. Move. Exercise to create more oxygen and qi flow in the body and to avoid stagnation.

6. Reduce stress. Meditate as often as possible, practice deep breathing, do yoga, and get plenty of sleep.

Clean Eating: Cantaloupe & Cucumber Salad

Here’s a refreshing side salad for a change of pace. It’s delicious served with a spicy grilled chicken, tofu, or fish. Or serve this over a bed of leafy greens with extra dressing on the side. Gently fold together 1/2 small cantaloupe and 1 medium cucumber (cut into 1/2 inch chunks), 1/2 cup crumbled feta, and 6 big basil leaves (sliced thinly). Whisk and add to salad: 1 tbsp olive oil, 2-3 tbsp balsamic vinegar, and freshly ground salt and pepper to taste. Top with 2 tbsp sunflower seeds. (This is the perfect place to showcase your gourmet balsamic vinegars and good quality olive oil. Skip the salt and sprinkle with a little Fleur de Sel for some drama!)
