Ask Dr. Tyler Anderson OD

Q: Should I get my kid to wear sunglasses? A: Yes. Ultra-violet light puts young eyes at risk for eye problems that often occur in adulthood such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and eyelid cancers. Many of my patients with skin cancer rue the fact that their parents did not get them protected from the sun adequately in childhood. Kids can be pretty fussy with their clothing (including eyewear), but for their sake it would be worth getting them to wear sunglasses. Getting brand-name sunglasses might be a good way to get a youngster to wear them, but inexpensive sunglasses will do the trick as long as they are certified to be UV protective.

7 Days of Self-Care

Self-care refers to any activity we do purposefully to take care of ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. On July 24 each year, people celebrate Self-Care Day – but any time is a great time to start practicing self-care. Why not try seven days of self-care to create new, healthy habits? Day 1: Unplug from technology for the day. Day 2: Declutter your physical space and mind. Day 3: Nourish yourself with food, water, sleep, and exercise. Day 4: Create something with your hands. Day 5: Listen to your feelings. Day 6: Express yourself to others. Day 7: Explore something new!

Acupuncture and Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent health problems in the world today, and the number of people who have diabetes is growing dramatically. Keeping Type 2 Diabetes under control requires a lot of daily effort and working with a team of health care professionals who care about you. Acupuncture has been shown to help improve many types of disease related to endocrine function. Research has indicated that acupuncture treatment can help to reduce fasting and after-eating blood sugar levels, increase insulin production, and reduce insulin resistance. Regular follow-up appointments can result in a better maintained morning fasting blood glucose.

Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

Heat exhaustion can lead to brain damage, organ failure, and death. Here are a few tips and reminders to keep your pets safe. Don’t let them play hard on hot days and make sure they have access to fresh water. Before walking your pets, test the temperature of the pavement. If you can’t hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds, it is too hot for your pets’ pads. Never leave your pet in a vehicle, even for “just a minute” while you run errands. Studies have shown that, even with the windows partially open, interior temperatures can rise to over 38 C in about 7 minutes at 31 C.

Men and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, a disease that renders bones porous and frail, causes over 30,000 hip fractures annually in Canada. While most people associate osteoporosis with women, around 25% of these fractures occur in men. To help prevent osteoporosis, make sure to exercise regularly, suited to your health. This will encourage bone cell renewal. If you are not getting enough nutrients from your food, you may require a dietary supplement such as calcium and vitamin D, which are crucial for bone health.
