September is World Alzheimer’s Month

Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to deteriorate over time. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging and is irreversible. While it’s difficult to predict symptoms, the order in which they will appear or the speed of their progression, there are some warning signs you can look out for. Sudden changes to your loved one’s personality are often another sign that something is not right. These changes can include anxiety, paranoia, depression, and socially inappropriate behaviors, as well as sudden mood swings and physical aggression.

What is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Much like psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis occurs when the immune system targets the joints and causes inflammation and damage. Psoriatic arthritis is a possible complication due to psoriasis, although not everyone who experiences psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis. Symptoms include localized tenderness, pain, and swelling, along with joint stiffness and reduced range of motion. There are also generalized symptoms that affect the entire body, such as chronic fatigue. Women and men between the ages of 30 and 50 are typically affected. Talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options that can offer the best results with minimal side effects.

Strengthen Your Immune System

As we age, our immune response capability reduces, which can lead to potential infection and disease. Since our body uses food to extract nutrients that prevent disease, it’s important that our diets contain nutrient-rich foods for an overall stronger immune system. Antioxidant-rich foods help fight against free radicals that can cause damage to the body, whereas sugary foods generate an inflammatory response within the body, causing health issues and lowering the immune system. Foods high in antioxidants include berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, goji berries), red cabbage, beans, dark chocolate, pecans, spinach, carrots, and potatoes.

Men’s Club

Did you know that Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. has a Men’s Club? For approximately 2.5 years, the Men’s Club has created a workspace where like-minded men can work shoulder-to-shoulder. Local volunteer men created this club to address a growing need to provide a safe space for men to meet weekly, share ideas, life experiences and provide value to Brandon. If you are interested in becoming a member to participate in workshops, presentations, games, small projects or just a friendly male voice, then please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or (204) 571-2050. The group meet every Wednesday from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at 311 Park Avenue East in Brandon.

Dentures & Weight Loss

It may come as a surprise to you, but when you lose weight, your clothes are not the only thing that you’ll notice become loose! Your weight loss can affect the fit and suction of your dentures, causing them to be uncomfortable. Weight loss causes changes to your entire body, including your mouth and gums. However, there is a solution: your Denturist can perform a simple procedure called a reline. A reline will “tighten up” your dentures so they fit well, create good suction, and feel comfortable again.

Emergency Lock Box

Have you ever asked yourself, how could I be rescued if my door was locked? Time is of the essence during a fire or medical emergency. Install a Lock Box – a small weather-resistant metal box that securely holds a set of keys. Should an emergency occur while you are unable to open the door or get out of the residence, Brandon Fire & Emergency Services (BFES) can access your property without having to break in. Contact Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. for more information.

Control Your Destiny

At times, you may struggle to find you meaning. By meaning, I am speaking about your purpose or significance. This could be in a relationship, at work, or in the community. This lack of clarity impacts how you convey yourself and the quality you bring. As a Coach, I partner with you in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires you to maximize your personal and professional potential. We will set goals that are significant, remove any obstacles or barriers to you reaching them, and ensure they are aligned with your values and passion.
