Community Profile – Crossmount Memory Café

The Crossmount Memory Café is a social and recreational community program for people living with dementia and their caregivers. It is hosted twice a month at Crossmount and provides a safe, supportive, and social outing for people who may otherwise have limited opportunities to engage with others experiencing similar dementia-related health and social barriers. Following refreshments and a light snack, participants engage in a wide variety of activities and experiences, including creative workshops, live entertainment, intergenerational activities, low-impact fitness activities, and more. Participating in the Memory Café provides opportunities for connection and belonging by decreasing social isolation and enhancing overall quality of life.

Group Exercise Classes Give You More Motivation

Should other people be part of your exercise routines? That’s largely a matter of personal preference, but exercising with a companion or in a group, whether at yoga or dance classes, or small group personal training sessions, has many upsides. That’s because people tend to stick more faithfully with group exercise classes than with solo fitness routines. “A bit of gentle peer pressure and friendly competition can go a long way when it comes to motivation,” says Dr. Dawn Skelton, a professor of aging and health at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. Even informal arrangements between friends have the advantage of making you accountable to somebody other than yourself. Learn about more benefits to group fitness at ProActiveFit.ca

Benefits of a Sauna Experience

A sauna is a small room that is heated to between 60-90*C. The purpose of the sauna is to heat up the body, the same way that your body would if you had a fever, helping your body heal itself! Heat decreases pain signals that reach your brain, reducing any pain or discomfort and increases the flow of oxygen to muscles helping heal damaged tissues. Heat also allows your body to sweat out any toxins that have built up in the body. Saunas are also face-friendly, they assist in relaxing face muscles, aid in clearer complexion, and help remove dirt and oil. One sauna session increases the amount of oxygen and nutrients delivered to your organs, especially your skin!
