Exercise – Adding Weights to Your Routine

We slowly got moving with last month’s health tip, now it is time to take it up a notch. Increase that morning routine from 10 to 20 minutes and start incorporating a few weight bearing exercises. This is incredibly important for better aging, as this helps to support insulin sensitivity for blood sugar control, but also for bone health and strength. Consider adding a weighted vest, ankle or wrist weights when walking; taking up Pilates equipment classes; or just using some free weights and resistance bands. If you are new to weight bearing, I suggest watching videos or taking some personal trainer sessions, to ensure you have correct posture and the weights are appropriate for your level of fitness.

Downsizing? Time to Declutter!

Decluttering is the first step to successful Downsizing. Decluttering has many advantages. It relieves stress through organization, makes room for those things you really need and use, prepares your house for sale and reduces family tension while settling an estate. One of the most important considerations is the fact that 80% of the time we only use 20% of our stuff. This helps us define the first things to consider passing on to family members or donating. Meet your Seniors Real Estate Specialist, SRES®, Sheri Willick – REALTOR® and Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Signature in Saskatoon for more information on downsizing.

Weil wants us to be sensible about growing old… He argues that we should not fight aging. There is no winning that war. Instead, we should concentrate on aging well.

Clean Eating Recipe

Anti-Inflammatory Cherry-Spinach Smoothie. This healthy smoothie is not only delicious–it also boosts your daily dose of anti-inflammatory foods. 1 cup plain low-fat kefir. 1 cup frozen cherries. ½ cup baby spinach leaves. ¼ cup mashed ripe avocado. 1 tablespoon salted almond butter. 1 (1/2 inch) piece peeled ginger. 1 teaspoon chia seeds. Place kefir in a blender. Add cherries, spinach, avocado, almond butter, ginger and chia seeds; puree until smooth. Pour into a glass; garnish with more chia seeds, if desired.

Exercise – Where to Start?

Make it part of your daily routine, no matter how out of shape you are! The key is to start with something manageable and that you like (or at least don’t hate), and it does not necessarily mean jumping into CrossFit or HIIT right away. I suggest getting up 10 minute earlier in the morning to do some gentle yoga or stretching with some breathing to help set the intention for the day. Taking a walk or bike ride after supper is great not only for movement, to get some of that natural vitamin D, as well as also blunting the blood sugar spike after eating. So start slow and get moving!
