Giving Back: Manitoba ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that affects approximately 3,000 Canadians and more than 289 Manitobans. Over the past twelve years, the Manitoba Walks for ALS have raised over $1.5 Million dollars to help support Research, Client Services and Education for Manitobans living with ALS/MND. Last year’s event in Winnipeg was a huge success with more than 1600 people participating, helping to raise over $210,000. This year’s goal is $250,000. Visit our website to register as an individual, team or just sponsor someone in the walk on June 20. Your donations allow the ALS Society of Manitoba to lend equipment and learning resources, and to offer services such as support groups, client services coordination, caregiver days, and more.

There must be a catch, you say, no “medicine” is that good!! Well, it is that good if you know the right exercises to do. You can’t just get a list of exercises from the Internet or from your friend and voila! You’re good to go. Exercise needs to be the right exercise for you. That means it needs to be appropriate for your physical status, your age, your goals, your health, and your aches and pains. It needs to be balanced so that you are not too strong and tight in some muscles and weak in others. To avoid negative side effects and get the best benefits from exercise, see a physiotherapist for the exercise program that is right for you.

Pet Health: Canicross

Canicross is the sport of running with your dog. Let’s face it. When it comes to running, six legs are better than two. Running with your dog is a great way to enjoy the world, get fit, and bond with your dog. However, before you get started here are some tips.

Tip #1 – You want to check with your family doctor and your dog’s veterinarian to make sure you and your dog have no restrictions when it comes to running.

Tip #2 – Making sure you have the proper gear such as a running harness for your dog, a bungee tether that connects you and your dog and a thick belt that lessens the load on your lower back. Having proper clothing and shoes are excellent tools for preventing injuries.

Tip #3 – Do not be a weekend warrior. Start slow, be consistent and build up to a fitness goal for both human and dog.
