Eye Exams for Children

Children should have regular eye exams to make sure their vision is developing properly. A first comprehensive eye exam is often recommended by age three, with another exam before starting school. Children should also have their eyes checked sooner if they complain of headaches, blurry or double vision, eye pain, or difficulty reading. Parents should watch for squinting, frequent eye rubbing, sitting very close to screens, covering one eye, eye redness, or an eye that turns in or out. Children with a family history of vision problems may need more frequent exams. If you notice sudden vision changes, severe pain, or an eye injury, seek medical attention promptly.
