What is Peer Support?

“A Peer Support Provider offers emotional and social support to others who share a common experience.” Mental Health Commission of Canada. Although Peer Support has been around as a form of mental and physical health support for a long time, this unique modality is quite new. Quite simply, a Peer Support Provider strives to create a welcoming, compassionate and empathetic environment for others who are struggling. A Peer Support Provider understands others’ challenges because they have struggled with similar issues and are able and willing to share their story of difficulty and recovery.
