Why Do Our Backs Fail?

This is a question often asked in our clinic and we commonly have two answers for our patients. Backs become injured when a high load (weight) is imposed on our back that exceeds its ability to deal with the single time lift. This would be the “push the car out of rut” example.

The other is repetitive stressors to our spine that have very light loads (weight) with little to no recovery between repetitions that cause the back to fail over time. This example being a worker who works at a pen factory and has to pick up a pen every 20 seconds to put it back on the conveyor belt. Both are equally harmful to your spine!

The fix? Strong core muscles and how fast those muscles respond!
