Music Therapy and Wellness

They say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me”. However, words have power! If the individual listens to songs with negative lyrics and messages, it can negatively impact their attitude, emotions, and self-worth. Music therapists may sometimes use these songs at first as part of what’s called the iso principle to meet the client where they are. However it’s not good to stay in that space. Music therapists may use lyric analysis, help create different playlists for different purposes, or introduce grounding songs to reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem and a sense of stability.

Importance of Counting your Marbles

I read an inspiring story by Maria Shriver who shared the importance of putting a marble in an empty jar for each day she lived a meaningful life. I did a rough calculation and estimated the time I might have left here on earth. It made me ponder how I wish to spend my days moving forward. What matters most. Who shall I spend it with and what shall I focus on? By the end of the day, I shall decide if I had a marble worthy day based on how I honored my heart and body not based on what I did. Looking at every day as a lifetime, an opportunity to get clear on what will allow my heart to be fulfilled, recognizing we have no real guarantee as to how much time we have left.

Hearing Aids & Summer

As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how to take care of your hearing aids. Beware of Heat! Avoid putting your hearing aids in places that attract heat quickly – like the glove compartment or console in your car. Stay Away from Moisture! Remember to take your hearing aids out before swimming or if you’re caught in the rain. Keep ‘em Clean! Warm, humid weather creates a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You can use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt and debris from your hearing aids. Follow these simple tips and get outside to enjoy the warm weather.

Fire Safety Tips

Here are tips for detecting a fire in your home and what to do so that everyone gets out safely: *Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. *Test smoke alarms monthly. If they aren’t working, replace the batteries immediately. *Discuss a fire escape plan with your entire family and practice it at least twice a year to ensure everyone knows what to do. *In the event of a fire in your home, remember: GET OUT, STAY OUT, and CALL FOR HELP. Be Safe in the Sun

Skin cancer is one of the most common and preventable forms of cancer. Apply SPF of at least 30 to 50 every two to four hours outdoors or riding in a car. Routinely wearing a quality pair of sunglasses protects the eyes from cataracts, a condition common among older adults. Look for a pair with a label showing they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. As we grow older, the body doesn’t adjust to changes in temperature and humidity as quickly as in younger days. This puts seniors at higher risk for dehydration and sun-related illnesses, like heat stroke, so make sure to keep hydrated!
