Sleep Changes & The Elderly

Seniors who wake up more often during the night and earlier in the morning, usually have a harder time falling asleep, and spend less time in deep, dreamless sleep. Some measures to help you sleep better include: 1) Eat a light bedtime snack. 2) Avoid caffeine for at least 3 or 4 hours before bed. 3) Avoid napping during the day. 4) Exercise regularly, but not within 3 hours of bedtime. 5) Practice relaxation techniques at bedtime. 6) Don’t watch TV or use devices while in bed. 7) Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

Emergency Lock Box

Have you ever asked yourself, how could I be rescued if my door was locked? Time is of the essence during a fire or medical emergency. Install a Lock Box – a small weather-resistant metal box that securely holds a set of keys. Should an emergency occur while you are unable to open the door or get out of the residence, Brandon Fire & Emergency Services (BFES) can access your property without having to break-in. Contact Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. for more information.

Men’s Club

Did you know that Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. had a Men’s Club? For approximately 2.5 years, the Men’s Club has created a workspace where like-minded men can work shoulder-to-shoulder. Local volunteer men created this club to address a growing need to supply a safe space for men to meet weekly, share ideas, life experiences and supply value to Brandon. If you are interested in becoming a member to take part in workshops, presentations, games, small projects or just a friendly male voice, then please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or (204) 571-2050. The group meet every Wednesday from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at 311 Park Avenue East in Brandon.

Staying Active All Year Long

Staying active during the colder months can be difficult with our harsh Manitoba winters; but it shouldn’t have to be. Whether you’re heading outside, or staying in, there are many ways to stay active. Outdoors, you will need to cover any exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite and be sure to wear proper footwear to reduce to risk of slipping on icy surfaces. Proper footwear should have that extra tread just as a winter tire would, or supplemental attachments on the bottoms of your shoes will help dig into those slippery surfaces. If you’re staying inside, YouTube is an excellent free source of multiple types of exercises.
