It isn’t all bad news when it comes to your favourite pumpkin fall treats. While drinks and pies contain sugar, pumpkin itself can be good for your teeth! They contain magnesium, which works with calcium to build strong tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Pumpkins are packed with fiber helping to scrub your teeth and contributes to saliva production. Like to spice it up? The cinnamon used to create the fall flavour contains antioxidants that can help boost your immune system, as well as anti-inflammatory properties that can help sooth irritated gums. So, enjoy, in moderation, and rinse with water afterwards.
Plan for the Future
Planning is important. We plan for things such as children, home purchases and funerals. As we age, we may require assistance with daily activities of living or something happens that leaves us unable to perform these activities. At this time, care might be the next step to maintaining independence. Planning ahead can help avoid the stress and anxiety of finding help when you need it the most. Things to consider: Do you want to stay in your own home? Do you have family who can assist in caring for you? Is your home accessible if your mobility decreases? We can help.
Move with Meaning
Are you aware that your hip socket knows when you get new glasses, have a tooth removed or don’t sense gravity well? The hip bones are amazing, living creatures. When you exercise, you need to move around your hip socket and the rest of the body orientates itself around that placement. The more you resist and ‘push’ through exercises just to feel like you are doing something good for yourself, the more potential there is for irritation and wear and tear arthritis. There are a million ‘bad’ ways to move but I do all I can to coach you through optimal movement.
Housekeeping Services
Saskatoon Services for Seniors offers housekeeping services for all seniors in Saskatoon. Our staff is screened and fully insured. We are here to assist with many household cleaning services such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, dusting and wall washing. We only provide the services that you require and as such only have a one hour minimum for each appointment. We can provide regular weekly service, bi-weekly services or just when you need us. The fee involved is based on the seniors income and if cost is a barrier, though our donors we can usually overcome this barrier to be able to get seniors the help they need.

Tips for Fall Prevention
November is Falls Prevention month. Falls are a real concern for older adults and can lead to injuries. The following tips can reduce your risk: • Get regular exercise and physical activity. • Have your medications reviewed by a physician or pharmacist as some medication combinations can cause dizziness, leading to falling. • Have your vision and hearing checked regularly. Poor vision and hearing are linked to increased falls. • Fall-proof your home by removing tripping hazards, using nightlights, and keeping items within reach. A Fall Risk Assessment at Robynne Smith Physiotherapy can help you stay steadier on your feet and reduce your risk of falling.

One Change at a Time
Fitness is a life long journey. It can’t be earned in one workout, gained by eating well for one week, or through one eight hour sleep. The long-term benefits only come to those who stick with the plan, adapt as life changes, and most importantly enjoy the ride. We call this building healthy habits. Imagine if you ate one apple a day and did 20-30 minutes of varied physical activity 3 days per week. Over one year that would be 365 apples and 78 hours of physical activity accumulated through your habits. Focus on making only one change every 2-4 weeks and watch your life change.
Early Osteoporosis Prevention
November is Osteoporosis Awareness Month, a condition that affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men in Canada. Osteoporotic hip fractures are more common and take up more hospital beds than stroke, heart attack, and diabetes. According to Osteoporosis Canada, after a hip fracture, 27% of people go into rehab care and 17% go to long-term care facilities. We begin to lose bone in our mid-thirties, so build it up in your twenties with weight-bearing exercise, balance support (yoga or Tai Qi), adequate calcium and minerals from diet, vitamin D supplements, and avoiding junk food/pop intake.
