TMJ Disorders, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, can sometimes be caused by a misaligned bite. When your dentures no longer fit properly because of ridge resorption and worn down tooth anatomy, this can lead to an incorrect bite, which in turn can cause TMJ pain. Symptoms like headaches, popping in the jaw, difficulty moving the jaw, pain in the jaw, neck pain, dizziness, pain in the ears, ringing in your ears, or even hearing loss could occur. If you experience these symptoms, talk with your denturist to see how they can help with this issue. Make sure to get your dentures checked regularly to prevent further problems.

Look for Local at Sobeys
BagelSmith makes authentic Montreal-style bagels that are hand rolled, boiled in honey water, and baked to perfection. Although the company opened in the middle of the pandemic, BagelSmith kept on rolling bagels and rolling with the punches. Their bagels are now sold at over 25 vendors province-wide, including Sobeys Brandon, where you can find four of their bagel flavours: sesame, everything, poppy, and plain. Sobeys Brandon also carries BagelSmith jarred everything spice, which is great on just about everything! BagelSmith is thrilled to team up with Sobeys Brandon to offer the people of Brandon a taste of what they do.
Review Your Medications
Keep in mind it is not just age that can effect our vision, it is also the medications we take and our general health that may have an effect. Having an open and honest dialog with your doctor and health team can be a great personal benefit to you.
Having a list of your current medications handy for these conversations is a good organizational tool. Your doctor will have your information from your file, this is for you to have in your hot little hands and review with your health team.
Due to so many falls happening in the home, whenever possible, also have your AHS Green Sleeve visible for emergency responders to access. May you never need this tool, however, if ever you do fall in your home, having your health information all in one easily spotted green folder in a visible location will help emergency responders help you faster.
The Golden Circle has a select amount of Green Sleeves available and all Albertans can receive a Green Sleeve from any Alberta health care provider. So when you are booking your next doctor’s appointment and would like a Green Sleeve, mention this during booking and one can be provided to you.
As November is Falls Prevention month we will be sharing resources to promote awareness throughout our community. We invite you to check out our website – https://www.goldencircle.ca/outreach/falls-prevention/ and social media platforms to discover and share these resources and more.

Foot Wear
The shoes you wear not only keep you looking stylish, but also help keep you balanced. As we age finding the proper shoe to help us keep our balance becomes more important. Heel support, the thickness of the sole of the shoe, shoe length and grip are all contributing factors to selecting an excellent shoe. Comfort and stability are key, fashion is slow to keep up in this area, thankfully new shoes are always popping up on the market.

Decluttering and Creating Flow
Did you know that our physical environment can affect our mental state? A cluttered countertop or disorganized closet can make us feel uneasy or change our mood. Here are some ways to improve the organization of your home and create a proper flow, free of physical (and mental) barriers. 1) Declutter countertops in your kitchen and bathroom. 2) Keep hallways free from clutter. 3) Consider using round tables in your home. 4) Choose furniture that properly fits the room it’s in. 5) Use a similar colour palette throughout the house. 6) Let the light in by not blocking any windows.
Tree of Lights
The BRHC Foundation’s Annual Tree of Lights campaign will run through the month of December. You can memorialize or honour someone special this holiday season. For a minimum $15 donation (tax receipt will be issued) the Foundation will:
• Hang a personalized tag in memory or honour of a loved one on the “Tree of Lights” located in the BRHC atrium.
• Turn on the lights on the evergreens that are located in the traffic loop at BRHC.
Keep Active
Whenever possible go for a walk, enjoy a swim, discover yoga, embrace tai chi. Your options are endless and the benefits are great. Moderate activity (150 min/week) throughout the year can be the biggest challenge, yet the greatest aid in falls prevention. You also have to maintain good balance, and have a strong core. For those with mobility issues, our community has great supports and resources dedicated to assisting you with healthy aging, much like Finding Balance’s Everyday Exercises for Older Adults, Red Deer PCN’s Strong and Steady Program and the Golden Circle’s Fitness classes.

November is Falls Prevention Month
The Prevention information You Need to Know
Falls. One of the leading causes for hospital visits for people of all ages throughout our Province. In 2017, Albertans visited the Emergency Room or an Urgent Care facility 154,004 times and 17,489 Alberta’s were hospitalized due to falls.
Falls can happen in your home, while playing your favourite sport, while chasing your babies/grandbabies around the house or the park, on vacation while your craning your neck to take in all the sights and sounds or if your like me… walking up the stairs.
While activity is key to healthy aging, so is falls prevention. There are several excellent resources the Golden Circle circulates through the community and with Falls Prevention Month kicking off in November, you can bet we will be sharing even more to our community to support active living and falls prevention.

Fighting the Flu
When you have the flu or are not feeling well, the best thing for you to do is make yourself cozy and to rest comfortably at home while you recover. Drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest, use a humidifier and make sure you have flu season health essentials on hand, including: Acetaminophen for fever, headache and minor aches and pains. Decongestants to relieve congestion and clear nasal passages. Sprays or lozenges to soothe a sore throat. Speak with your Pharmasave pharmacist about flu shots, prevention, appropriate symptom relief and other ways to stay healthy this flu season.
