Things you can do to make your home safer and reduce the risk of falling:
• Remove tripping hazards like clutter, small throw rugs • Keep items you use the most easily accessible • Improve lighting to ensure you can see your path when walking, especially at night • Install grab bars in the bathroom and ensure your home has handrails on all staircases • Wear non-slip shoes both inside and outside of the house • Get a Home Safety Assessment if you are at risk of falling; an Occupational Therapist can help to advise you on making your home safer.
Effective Pain Reduction Treatment
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an effective therapeutic technique used in physiotherapy clinics. IMS uses small, pin-like needles to reduce muscle tension, eliminate pain, restore range of motion, and promote a return to normal function. Sometimes known as Functional Dry Needling (FDN), it is used to treat “trigger points” or “knots” within the body. As the needle is inserted into the muscle tissue, a patient usually experiences a feeling of localized cramping, twitching, or aching within the muscle followed by a release. Despite this initial short-term discomfort, patients respond quickly as it promotes healing and better function.
Words To Live By
“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”
-H. Jackson Brown Jr.
What is CPAP Therapy?
Otherwise known as constant positive airway pressure, CPAP therapy is the gold standard choice in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea with significantly higher success rates than corrective surgery or dental appliances in moderate to severe cases. A pressure is applied gently to the airway to relieve flaccid anatomical muscle tone during sleep through an externally affixed mask. The patient’s perception is that like a fan, that translates into an airway splint or pressure to keep the airway open during sleep. Through repetitive use and as their pre-treatment symptoms subside, improved breathing is achieved.

Concerned about your Senior Loved One?
The Red Deer PCN’s Elder Care Assessment Clinic helps diagnose and care for people 75 years and older living with dementia and geriatric syndromes such as frailty, delirium, falls and incontinence. Ask your family doctor for a referral if you have concerns about memory, behavior or function of a senior. A multidisciplinary assessment with the patient and care partner is used to develop a care plan to be implemented by their doctor. “Excellent program. Very informative, eases family stress if done earlier in stages of aging.”
Cavity and Dental Disease Prevention
A cavity happens when bacteria in the mouth produces acid that attacks your teeth. Over time, this acid can dissolve away the tooth enamel and cause a hole, or cavity. Unlike some other diseases or injuries, a cavity will not heal by itself, but if the early signs of dental decay are promptly treated before a cavity forms, it can be stopped or even reversed by your dentist and your home care. To prevent dental disease: brush twice a day, floss once a day, eat a balanced diet, limit eating and drinking between meals, and visit your dentist regularly.
The Chinese Way
There’s a saying in Chinese Medicine, “If you fix a women’s menstruation, 70% of her problems will disappear.” If you suffer from menstrual pain, no period, heavy or irregular periods, spotting in between periods, and even a period that just won’t quit, or infertility, these gynecological issues may be resolved with Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. In addition, it’s also a safe and effective therapy for menopausal and peri-menopausal problems such as headaches, migraines, hair loss, anxiety, depression, mood-swings, night sweats, hot flashes, blurred vision, floaters in the vision, lethargy, dry skin, and so on.
Natural Skin Rejuvenation with PRP
Platelets help stop bleeding and contain substances called “growth factors” that activate and rejuvenate cells in our body. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses the patient’s natural biology to address skin defects and volume loss, triggering production of new cells and collagen formation. PRP is injected into the skin and this treatment may promote natural tissue regeneration and increase collagen production, improving the quality of the skin, smoothing fine line and wrinkles, and helping to restore luminosity. The results in the injected area may be seen over the course of several weeks following the treatment.
Product Review: Advances in Contact Lens
Every day our eyes are challenged by changing light that causes us to squint, shade our eyes, or turn down screen brightness. ACUVUE® OASYS with TransitionsTM adjusts to challenging light environments, such as when playing sports, working under uncomfortable office lighting, or adjusting our eyes to digital screens or TVs. They reduce the stressful impact that light can have on your eyes, by reducing squinting so you can squint less and see more. They are also designed to offer the highest level of UV protection in contact lenses, blocking 100% UVB and >99% UVA.
Jin Shin Jyutsu & Fertility
Various forms of traditional oriental medicine, like Jin Shin Jyutsu, have been used for millennia to treat infertility by restoring and maintaining harmonious balance of the body’s energy pathways to help resolve problems associated with infertility. It can re-establish the flow of energy, after which physical symptoms may be resolved and reproductive functioning restored. For example, a severe disturbance or blockage resulting from our stress levels can lead to disruption of egg production, fertilization and/or implantation of the fertilized egg. Receiving JSJ, as well as doing self-help JSJ practices, can help restore balance and address these issues.
