The Power of Strength & Nutrition

As we age, taking care of our bodies becomes even more crucial. Strength and nutrition play vital roles in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise and a balanced diet can significantly improve our physical and mental well-being. Engaging in strength training exercises helps preserve muscle mass, increase bone density, and improve overall body strength. Simultaneously, proper nutrition provides the necessary nutrients and energy to support our body’s functions, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and enhance cognitive abilities. At Body Tempo Health and Fitness, we understand the importance of strength and nutrition as we age. Contact us to find out more.

Fall Preventation at Home

Each year, an alarming number of people over the age of 65 experience a fall. Research has shown that as many as one in four older people fall every year. Falling in their homes is a serious risk that seniors face when they are alone. Here are some tips to help prevent falls before they happen: *ensure you have adequate lighting in your home, *always take a cordless phone or cell phone with you if you are going downstairs and *try not to move around your home more than you need to after taking medication that can impair your balance.

Stay Safe in the Heat

During the warm, sunny days of summer, older adults are at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses. During extreme heat, stay indoors, stay as cool as possible and drink plenty of clear fluids. Avoid drinking alcohol and wearing tight-fitting clothing. A symptom of too much heat is swollen feet and ankles. More serious symptoms are dizziness, fainting, a change in behaviour, dry, flushed skin and a lack of perspiration. If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 911 and apply cold wet cloths to the armpits, neck and groin area. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

In-Home Care to Reduce Readmission

Readmission to the hospital after an illness or injury is a serious health issue for seniors. It is important for seniors and their loved ones to remember that in many cases, readmission is avoidable and can be prevented with a thoughtful post-hospital care plan. Consider having the following in place: *Medication assistance and management, *Discharge plan for patient and family members and *A helping hand at home. A helping hand can be family, friends or professional caregivers. For many seniors, a professional caregiver can help them overcome some of the main preventable causes of returning to the hospital.

Raise Your Vibration

Clutter takes up space in your life. It’s time to declutter; time to open space physically and energetically. Decluttering works on the very human emotion and vibration of attachment, a dense vibration of need and lack. The job of commercialism in our society is to keep us buying on the premise that what we purchase will make us happy. Before we know it, our personal world is filled with clutter. As you remove clutter you set the stage for movement, clarity and possibility. You feel lighter as you release attachments. Your mind and heart receive open space for creativity, consciousness and contentment. You raise your Energy-Body vibration.

Collect all this precious wisdom and begin living it daily. Saying yes fully and unapologetically to what brings you joy and no thank you to what depletes and drains you. Daring to live and love fully!

Ask The Expert

Q: I’m travelling overseas next month on vacation and am trying to decide between bringing contact lenses or glasses. What should I do? A: Consider both if your vision is comparable. Daily disposable contact lenses are great for hygiene and convenient for travelling, and some even have built-in UV protection. Long flights, as well as airborne allergens and irritants, may necessitate eyeglasses just as much. Your vacation will be more enjoyable if your vision is good and your eyes are healthy and protected. Come see us for your vision care needs, and we can help you make the best decision for your specific situation.

Choosing a Mental Health Practitioner

Mental health practitioners in BC range in knowledge, expertise and experience. When seeking assistance, this range of ability can make it difficult to understand a practitioner’s level of competence. This is why regulation of this profession is so important. To better protect the public, there is a desire to regulate the profession, which will hopefully happen in the near future. Meanwhile, when looking for assistance, it is important to research mental health professionals. Discuss their level of education, experience, certifications/registrations and to what associations and/or colleges they belong to and are held accountable for their conduct.
